Microsoft announced today that it will be holding a “Microsoft 365 Copilot: Wave 2” online event on September 16, 2024. The event will be live-streamed on LinkedIn, and it will feature Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Jared Spataro, the company’s Corporate Vice President of AI at Work.
The brief description for the event invites users to “discover the next phase of Copilot for work.” Microsoft launched its Copilot for Microsoft 365 add-on for commercial customers last fall, which is getting new features at a regular pace. For consumers, a Copilot Pro subscription is also available at $20/month, and it unlocks new AI features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

According to The Verge’s Tom Warren, Microsoft could announce some branding changes during its Microsoft 365 Copilot event. “Copilot for Microsoft 365” will reportedly be rebranded to “Microsoft 365 Copilot,” while “Copilot in Word“ should become “Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word.”
If Microsoft’s branding efforts often leave people scratching their heads, the mention of “wave 2” suggests that other substantial changes are coming for the company’s AI assistant. At $30 per user per month on top of a Microsoft 365 commercial subscription, Copilot for Microsoft 365 isn’t exactly cheap, and it may still lack a killer feature that pushes more organizations to pay for it.
