Threads Improves its Integration With the Fediverse

Meta Threads Fediverse Sharing

Threads, which recently crossed 200 million monthly active users, is continuing to improve its integration with the fediverse. Earlier this year, Meta’s Twitter/X clone allowed users outside of the EU to share their posts with users on other servers in the fediverse, including Mastodon and Flipboard.

Fediverse sharing still remains an opt-in feature in markets where it’s available. However, Meta made two separate improvements to fediverse sharing on Threads yesterday.

First of all, the official Threads app is no longer required for sharing posts to the fediverse: Posts created from third-party apps using the new Threads API can now be shared to other fediverse-integrated servers as well.

In June, Threads also made it possible for users who have enabled fediverse sharing to see likes and replies to their own posts coming from the fediverse. These interactions are visible in a separate “fediverse replies” category below each post. This week, Meta is starting to make fediverse replies visible on all public posts from Thread users who have enabled fediverse sharing.

Threads is one of the biggest social platforms to support the fediverse through the open ActivityPub protocol. While this isn’t a killer feature yet, it’s good to see a company like Meta support decentralized social media networks. Eventually, users across Threads and other fediverse-connected servers should be able to seamlessly follow each other and have interactions without having to create accounts on different platforms.
