Starfield May Update is Out With 60FPS Support on Xbox Series X

Starfield

Bethesda’s space-themed RPG Starfield is getting today its biggest patch since its launch on Xbox Series X|S and PC back in September. The May update adds improved surface maps to the game, 60FPS and VSync support on Xbox Series X, and more.

With Microsoft claiming to have the most powerful current-gen console on the market with the Xbox Series X, having its biggest game of the generation so far being restricted to 30FPS was pretty much a sad throwback to the Xbox One and Xbox 360 era. Starfield director Todd Howard previously said that restricting the game to 30FPS on Xbox was a design choice, but it’s good that Bethesda ultimately found a way to further optimize the game. Xbox Series S owners, however, will be out of luck.

On the Series X, players can now choose between 30 or 60FPS modes, and they can also prioritize between Visuals and Performance for each mode. Players with a VRR display running 120hz will also get an additional 40FPS mode and an Uncapped frame rate option. By default, the game will choose a frame rate target of 40 and keep the priority for full visuals when playing on a VRR display running at 120hz.

Starfield’s improved surface maps launching today have been a top-requested feature from users, and they should make the game’s planets and cities easier to navigate. There’s also a new option to disable the game’s Dialogue Camera, which will remove the zoom on the NPCs’ sometimes awkward-looking faces when talking to them.

Lastly, the Starfield May update adds a Ship Decoration mode for the interior of ships and new options to adjust the difficulty of ground and ship combat. If you’ve been waiting to give Starfield a try, now seems to be a very good time to do so. Bethesda is also expected to share some news about Shattered Space, the game’s first expansion during Microsoft’s Xbox Games Showcase on June 9.
