AW Farms, a meat processing facility and public market in Argillite, Kentucky, is recalling approximately 6,900 pounds of hot dog products that were “produced without the benefit of federal inspection.”

According to information posted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) on July 15, the ready-to-eat hot dogs were produced on various dates starting around May 30 and have a shelf life of 45 days.

The FSIS says the inspection problem was discovered when a state public health partner notified the office about these products. The agency investigated and determined that the hot dog products were produced and distributed without federal inspection.

The agency says that under the Federal Meat Inspection Act (FMIA), all meat sold commercially is required to pass an inspection to ensure that it is “safe, wholesome, and properly labeled.” The FSIS is responsible for performing this inspection.

The recalled items were shipped to restaurant and hotel locations in Ohio and West Virginia.

The FSIS adds it’s concerned that some of these products may be in the refrigerators or freezers of restaurants or hotels, and that these places are urged not to serve the recalled hot dogs. Restaurants and hotels are encouraged to throw the products away or return them to where they were purchased.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to product consumption, according to the FSIS. The agency urges anyone concerned about a potential reaction to contact a healthcare provider.
