From Minnesota to Paris: How Suni Lee's siblings have supported her Olympic journey

Suni Lee is one of six siblings: Shyenne, Evionn, Noah, Lucky and Jonah.

Suni Lee, the 2020 Olympic all-around champion in women's gymnastics, has a big family backing her athletic journey.

Born in 2003, Suni is one of six siblings: Shyenne, Evionn, Noah, Lucky and Jonah. (Her mother, Yeev Thoj, met John Lee when Suni was 2, and the Olympian looks to him as a father figure.)

Shyenne and Evionn travelled to Paris to cheer their sister on at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Most recently, the pair witnessed her compete and win gold in the women's gymnastics team final.

"You are unreal. Beyond proud," Shyenne wrote in an Instagram story of Suni taking the podium with her teammates.

Suni and her siblings grew up near St. Paul, Minnesota

In a July 29, 2021, interview with ESPN, Suni's parents shared more about their Hmong heritage. The Hmong are an ethnic group with a significant community residing in Minnesota, where Suni and her siblings were raised.

Suni's father told ESPN he wanted to take the Olympian and Shyenne to Laos, where both of her parents are from and one of many countries where the Hmong live, after the Olympics before they went to college. However, they never got to go because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Suni's sister Shyenne supports her on and off the mat

In the same interview with ESPN, Suni revealed it was hard to stay motivated in gymnastics when the Tokyo Olympic Games were postponed due to the pandemic. Shyenne told ESPN that she took on the task of supporting her sister.

"I keep her life from being only gymnastics,” Shyenne told ESPN. “I keep her social life active. I keep her normal.”

"We always make time for each other," she added.

Although she couldn't make it to Tokyo in person, Shyenne was pictured celebrating Suni's win in the women's all-around gymnastics final July 29, 2021. Later that year, Shyenne joined Suni at the Sports Illustrated awards, where Suni won "Female Athlete of the Year."

Shyenne, a dancer, was also asked by Suni's coaches to help choreograph her Tokyo Olympics floor routine, according to a POPSUGAR interview with the sister Nov. 10, 2021.

“They knew I could let go and be free with her,” Suni told POPSUGAR.

“Suni, she’s my other half,” Shyenne said in the same interview. “I don’t really know how to explain it, but we always joke about how we’re each other’s soulmates.”

Suni's family has joined her on TV

Suni's parents and siblings Shyenne and Noah joined the gymnastics star on TODAY Aug. 5, 2021.

The appearance marked the first time the family was together since Suni arrived home from the Tokyo Olympics.

“Oh I’m so proud, I’m crazy about it,” Shyenne told TODAY. “I love it, I’m so proud of her.”
