As someone who has naturally curly hair, I'm always looking for new products to help reduce frizz and maintain style for more than a day. For most of my life, I've used cotton pillowcases and wrapped my hair up at night — whether it be with a bonnet or a scarf.
But the nights that I end up falling asleep without a bonnet or scarf on occur more often than I'd like to admit and, having heard about the benefits of silk and satin pillowcases for your hair and skin, I decided it was time to take the leap.
When I was in college, my search began where it does for most students — Amazon. It didn't take long for me to stumble upon these satin pillowcases with hundreds of thousands of positive reviews; and they were less than $10! It was music to my ears — and college student wallet — so I immediately clicked "add to cart" and the rest was history.
Bedsure Satin Pillowcases
Why I like these satin pillowcases
The difference was immediate
I didn't think that there was going to be that much of a noticeable difference when switching from cotton to satin — boy, was I wrong. The next morning, my hair wasn't as tangled or frizzy as it was using cotton pillowcases. I consider myself a "hard sleeper," aka I move around a lot throughout the night, so I'd gotten used to waking up to tangles, frizz and broken hairs left behind. That wasn't the case the morning after using these satin pillowcases.
I tend to wash my hair and style it at night, usually falling asleep with wet hair (even though I probably shouldn't). After using these pillowcases, I can confidently go to sleep knowing that my hair will look the same when I wake up — even if I fall asleep without a bonnet on!
The best part? In the morning, all I have to do is give my hair a good shake and proceed to style it however I'd like for the day.
I even noticed a difference in my skin
As someone with combination-to-oily skin, I always thought I was just prone to breakouts because of my skin type. I never considered my pillowcases as something that could be affecting me. Admittedly, I also probably wasn't changing my cotton pillowcases often enough, which means I spent one too many nights laying on material that soaked in all the oils from my skin.
Within a few weeks, I noticed that I was breaking out less — with no change to my diet, exercise habits or skin care routine, just using satin pillowcases.
It's been six years and I still use them...
When I first wrote this story, I was a college student in 2019 who was just looking for something affordable that would help my hair. I didn't imagine I'd keep them for very long, assuming they'd fall apart quickly since they were less than $10. Once again, I was wrong.
Since then, I've amassed quite the collection of silk and satin pillowcases, using this type almost exclusively (with the exception of my side sleeper Pillowcube). While the Bedsure satin pillowcases aren't the only ones I use anymore, they still have a spot in my biweekly rotation (yes, I've since gotten into the habit of changing my pillowcases regularly).
The black and gray sets I bought in 2019 are both still going strong and are occasionally used depending on the sheet set my bed is sporting. The lilac set is a welcome addition to my current patterned setup.
For anyone looking to try out satin pillowcases, I always direct them to these. They're durable, affordable and come in dozens of colors. What more could you want?
