CARE Ratings South Africa (Pty) Limited a subsidiary of CareEdge Africa Ratings is the latest domestic rating agency to be licensed by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) of South Africa, to offer credit rating services, including sovereign ratings in South Africa. This is a significant milestone towards alternative credit rating opinions and developing the domestic financial markets. The African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is supporting African-based rating agencies to expand their capacities to issue sovereign credit ratings, to both the 22 unrated African countries, with no credit ratings from any of the three dominant CRAs and over 90% of corporates and municipalities that remains unrated. Adv. Batlokoa Makong Represents APRM at Third Retreat of African Special Envoys in Nairobi, Kenya. At the retreat organised by International IDEA, Adv. Makong discussed the shifting perceptions of democracy among African citizens. He noted that public frustration with government performance—particularly in corruption, insecurity, and human rights—plays a key role, often worsened by weak oversight institutions. Adv. Makong cited findings from the Afrobarometer survey (2024), the African Governance Report (2023), and the Mo Ibrahim Index (2024) to support his insights.
