Empowa: An African Blockchain-Based Technology Company and the NSE Want to Empower "Hustlers" with Affordable Housing Finance 🌍🏠 Meet Empowa. Founded in 2021 by Glen Jordan. Empowa is tackling one of Africa’s biggest challenges: affordable housing. Most families in Africa don’t qualify for traditional mortgages. Why? Over 85% of income is informal—irregular and unrecorded. This means millions are locked out of the housing finance market. Empowa is changing that. Using blockchain, they’ve created a flexible payment system that works for the informal economy. And now, they’re teaming up with the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE). “Very few people in developed countries understand how the existing financial systems are designed for their societies and how they are not fit for purpose in the developing world. We need to design financial products and systems that meet the needs of our societies but maintain the financial reporting and discipline that capital require. We need to build systems from the bottom-up,” said Glen. In Beira, Mozambique, Empowa’s impact is clear. With Kenya’s housing demand rising, the NSE partnership is key. Empowa is proving that the “hustler economy” deserves decent housing. 🔑 Read full article: https://lnkd.in/dCmsefmn Abeera Akhtar | Greg Schneider | Irthu Suresh Marie-Odile Zanders | John O'Connor, Ken Kodama | RealFi |Olivia Nielsen | Richard Bahumwire | Kecia Rust | Mercy Corps Ventures | Atlantis IT Group | Trevor Kimani | alphabloQ (Techstars '22) | Kenya Blockchain and Crypto Conference | Investa Farm Ltd (StartupBootcamp 24) #AffordableHousing #Blockchain #Empowa #Innovation #Cardano #Africa

I had the pleasure of meeting Thierno-Habib Hann, CFA, CEO and Managing Director of Shelter Afrique Development Bank, at the recent World Bank Annual Meetings. Our discussion centered on the potential for collaboration between Shelter Afrique Development Bank and the African Union Peace Fund, particularly in aligning Shelter Afrique’s expertise in real estate finance and housing with the Peace Fund’s mission of supporting communities affected by conflict. We explored the role of secure housing and resilient infrastructure as foundations for sustainable peace. Shelter Afrique Development Bank’s experience in rehabilitating housing, resettling displaced populations, and rebuilding communities resonates strongly with our objectives. These efforts are essential for stabilization, especially in crisis-affected regions. As part of this commitment, we agreed to expedite our collaboration framework, which is currently under review. I am optimistic about the impact we can achieve by bridging peacebuilding and urbanization for a peaceful, resilient #Africa. #AUPeaceFund #ShelterAfrique #ConflictRecovery #PartnershipsForPeace #FinancingPeace #TheAfricaWeWant

🌍 On November 5th, an inspiring conversation took place at #WUF12, exploring how collaboration can drive change in the housing sector. Moderated by Mewahib Mohamed, our Director of Programme and Business Development, the session brought together leading experts across sectors to discuss the transformative power of collaborative housing solutions. Key highlights from the session: 🏙️ Mia Callenberg, Environmental Specialist from Global Environment Facility (GEF) advocated for empowering cities to take a leadership role in addressing local housing challenges, highlighting the importance of strong, multilateral governance models to align national and local efforts. 🏘️ Julian Baskin, Principal Urban Advisor from Cities Alliance emphasised the potential of community-driven housing solutions, particularly focusing on informal settlements and small-scale local contractors to improve the quality and sustainability of housing. 🌱 Cathy Lynch, Senior Urban Specialist from The World Bank Focused on making green housing accessible, arguing that framing green features as cost-saving benefits, rather than added expenses, can drive demand and promote energy-efficient housing. 🤝 Dr. Folayinka Dania, Chief Resilience Officer from Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO), stressed the need for collaboration across sectors, highlighting that no single institution can solve the housing crisis alone. She encouraged bringing together governments, developers, and communities to create holistic solutions. 🏗️ Nyale Yanga, Chief Financial Officer from Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company (KMRC), advocated for engaging local developers and communities in the housing process, ensuring that housing solutions are both scalable and relevant to the unique needs of each area. 💚 As we continue to build a more sustainable future, it's clear that partnerships, innovation, and community collaboration are essential to making meaningful progress in the housing sector. #GAH #GreenAffordableHousing #SustainableDevelopment #WUF12 #HousingOurFuture #Collaboration #InvestmentOpportunities #GenderInclusion #ItAllStartsAtHome #ItAllStartsLocally #ItAllStartsTogether #ItAllStartsNow World Urban Forum 12 Egypt Ian Shapiro (he/him)
