This pioneering initiative, facilitated through the office of the Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane and led by the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) in partnership with Microsoft South Africa and Deviare, an ICT small business, aims to boost digital literacy, bridge the digital divide, and empower youth in the Eastern Cape. This project represents the first phase of a five-year Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative, with a total investment of R550,000 aimed at supporting five selected schools in the region. The ELIDZ contributed R200,000 to the project, with Microsoft South Africa covering the remaining R350,000. This week, the ELIDZ participated in the South African Auto Week, organised by Naamsa to keep abreast of the latest developments and opportunities in this important sector. With just over 50% of the enterprises that are operating in the ELIDZ being in the auto sector, the ELIDZ recognizes the role and impact that the automotive sector has played in driving and expanding the economy of both the Buffalo City Metro and the Eastern Cape province as a whole. The ELIDZ continues to look at different strategies to attract new investment and increase the localisation of the auto sector value chain in the province and the SAAW provided the organisation with great insight on key developments in the domestic and global automotive sectors. The event, which celebrated 100 years of automotive manufacturing in South Africa, also presented the Eastern Cape, through Premier Oscar Mabuyane, an opportunity to present its offering to investors in this sector and to further entrench its position as the leading automotive hub of South Africa.
