With the support of the Oceans Finance Company, I AM WATER will be embarking on a trip to the Galapagos to train 11 organisations in our Ocean Connection Methodology! During the training we will dive deeper into how to bring an Ocean Connection Workshop 🤿 to life while focusing on knowledge sharing 💭 , contextualisation, and community asset mapping 🗺️ This training will be I AM WATER’s biggest OFAA training to date and we are delighted to see the Alliance growing in the Global South! We have begun our online theoretical component to the training and we head off later this month. We are all water, and we all share the opportunity and challenge to protect our last wilderness beneath the waves. I AM WATER does this through education, awareness and advocacy with a focus on innovative Ocean Guardians workshops offered to underserved coastal communities globally and working with over 3000 Grade 7 students in the Western Cape each year. I AM WATER was founded in 2010 and is committed to sharing ocean experiences with those who need it most.

🌿 New study discovers never-before-seen species in the Great African Seaforest! Here's why we're excited about it: 🧬 Using the novel approach of eDNA Metabarcoding, a recent team of scientists explored South Africa’s kelp forests, detecting 880 species, including a few never before discovered. 🧬 At the Kelp Forest Foundation, we recently funded a study led by Dr. Narissa Bax. Dr. Bax collected eDNA water samples from the kelp forests in the Falkland Islands, one of the world’s most pristine and untouched kelp forests, without disturbing animals within the ecosystem. 🧬 Dive deeper into the study, and our work at the Falkland Islands with Narissa Bax and NatureMetrics below. On today's African Day of Seas and Oceans, we want to shine a light on the immense, and largely untapped, ocean opportunities in African countries 🌍 With over 30,000 km of coastline and over 1.5 million km2 of Exclusive Economic Zones, African countries are highly dependent on the ocean. While it underpins coastal livelihoods and food security, and protects coastal zones against extreme weather and climate events, the ocean is under threat in the region. The #OceanDecade is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to trigger the ocean knowledge revolution that is much needed, especially in Africa where there are critical gaps in ocean data and knowledge. The Ocean Decade Africa Roadmap provides a vision and plan for diverse stakeholders from government, industry, philanthropy, UN agencies, civil society and the scientific community, to convene around a common set of nine priorities for the implementation of the Decade in Africa to help fill these gaps: 1️⃣ Sustainable Ocean Management in Africa 2️⃣ Ocean and Human Health in Africa 3️⃣ Unlocking the Blue Carbon Potential of Africa 4️⃣ Fisheries and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fisheries in Africa 5️⃣ Strengthening Multi-hazard Early Warning Systems and Community Resilience 6️⃣ Ocean Observations and Forecasting Systems for Africa 7️⃣ Digital Twin for Africa - Establishing an African Ocean Knowledge 8️⃣ Strengthening capacities and skills of African Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) 9️⃣ Regional Ocean Literacy Programme for Africa Download the Ocean Decade Africa Roadmap here: https://lnkd.in/dT_pgQCx

How many Marine Protected Areas does South Africa have? 🌊 As of 2024, South Africa has 42 MPAs - covering 5% of our national coastal waters. This is an incredible achievement, as this number was just 0.43% before 2016! 💙 These MPAs are scattered along the coast of South Africa: From the Orange Shelf Edge (pristine and untrawled by commercial fishers) on Namibia's border all the way to iSimangaliso (a special feeding site for sea turtles) on the border of Mozambique. In between, we have iconic sites - Robben Island, Tsitsikamma, Pondoland, and many more.🪸🤩

🌊 World Oceans Day 2024: Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate 🌊 In celebration of World Oceans Day, OFC partnered with I AM WATER OCEAN CONSERVATION FOUNDATION to bring 65 children from Heideveld, Cape Town, to the Two Oceans Aquarium. The community of Heideveld faces significant challenges from poverty and unemployment to gangsterism. For many of these children, this was their very first encounter with the ocean and its inhabitants. In addition to the aquarium visit, each child received a copy of "Zandi's Song," a beautiful story about the magic of the ocean and the importance of protecting it. The theme for World Oceans Day this year is Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate. At OFC, we are dedicated to promoting education and environmental conservation and through this initiative, we aim to be the catalyst in inspiring these children to protect our ocean and, in turn, our climate. The State of the Ocean Report 2024 by UNESCO Ocean is live! Shedding light on the health of the ocean, new findings, and areas in which we need to be increasing our action, this report is an eye opening reminder of why we need to be working tirelessly to protect the ocean 🌊
📢 Just published: The State of the Ocean Report 2024 by UNESCO Ocean finds that the ocean crisis is developing faster than our knowledge of it, and provides a comprehensive health check of our ocean. In this report, you'll find all the latest trends and data available on key ocean issues, from marine pollution, ocean warming, acidification and de-oxygenation to the status of ocean observation, early-warning systems for tsunamis, the inclusion of Indigenous and traditional knowledge in ocean science, and more. Key findings include: 🔹 The rate of ocean warming doubled in 20 years and the rate of sea level rise doubled in 30 years 🔹 Observations and research is falling short, leading to a lack of adequate and aggregated data. But as more states, industries and organizations realize that we need to measure in order to manage and protect marine ecosystems, we gradually get more data, get deeper into the issues, and can include new topics of research. 🔹 We need to accelerate the mobilization already under way in the #OceanDecade 🔹 We need to transform ocean science and our relationship to it. 🔹 We need better knowledge as a basis for sustainable ocean planning and management, within and beyond areas of national jurisdiction. 🔹 We need a much stronger, much faster and more dynamic interplay between ocean knowledge, policy and action.
