Section 23 of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act in South Africa is titled "Right of employees to leave dangerous working places." Key provisions of Section 23 include: Right to Leave: Employees have the right to leave their workplace if they have reasonable grounds to believe that they are in serious and imminent danger. Immediate Reporting: If an employee exercises this right, they must immediately report the situation to their employer or supervisor. The report should include the nature of the danger and the reasons for leaving the workplace. Investigation: Upon receiving such a report, the employer or supervisor is required to investigate the situation promptly. They must take appropriate steps to mitigate the danger and ensure that the workplace is safe before requiring the employee to return. No Disciplinary Action: An employee who exercises this right in good faith cannot be subjected to disciplinary action or any other prejudice for leaving the dangerous workplace. Section 23 is crucial as it empowers employees to prioritize their safety without fear of repercussions, ensuring that they can avoid work that poses an imminent and serious risk to their health or life. #healthandsafety #MineworkerMagazine #Mining #Abasebenzi #NgenaUphilaPhumaUphilaCampaign

In the traditionally male-dominated field of mining, women often feel compelled to adopt masculine traits to navigate the industry's demanding and sometimes hostile environment. This adaptation can include exhibiting assertiveness, toughness, and emotional restraint, which are typically valued in such settings. For many women, embracing these characteristics is a survival strategy to gain respect, credibility, and equal opportunities within a sector that has historically marginalized them. However, this necessity to operate in a more masculine manner can lead to challenges in maintaining a balance between their authentic selves and the expectations of the industry. It highlights the need for more inclusive workplace cultures where diversity of thought, leadership styles, and approaches are valued rather than conformity to traditional gender norms.
