We are delighted to announce that we have signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). This partnership aims to fast-track the economic inclusion of unemployed youth in retail and manufacturing, by expanding the reach of our industry-led skills development programmes. This partnership highlights a strong commitment from the public and private sectors to combat South Africa's high youth unemployment rate. "Working alongside Mr Price Foundation will enable us to expand opportunities for young people in a more strategic and sustainable way. Through initiatives like these, we’re ensuring that South Africa’s youth are not only job-ready but also equipped to thrive in a dynamic economic landscape," said Karabo Mohale Executive Deputy Chairperson of the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Board. We look forward to expanding learning and work opportunities to more youth under this new partnership. This Women's Month, we shine the spotlight on the amazing young women who we are proudly empowering through the Creative Entrepreneurship Programme. This 12-week course is a collaboration between our JumpStart skills development programme and the African Academy of Fashion in Cape Town. These young fashionistas will add to the tally of over 5,700 women empowered by Mr Price Foundation in the 2024 financial year alone. With 36,6% of young women aged 15-24 years not in employment, education or training (NEET), we believe skills development and entrepreneurship are key to unlocking the doors of economic opportunity. This Women’s Month, we celebrate the women of Mr Price Foundation! 79% of our JumpStarters are women. This equates to over 5,700 young women between the ages of 18 and 33 who we have proudly upskilled to enter the retail and supply chain industry this past financial year. This is significant in the face of South Africa's youth unemployment crisis – with women experiencing higher rates of unemployment than men. The inaugural Mail & Guardian #YoungSummit in June was yet another confirmation that we collectively have to move with measured speed to tackle the youth unemployment challenge facing the country - through creating multiple pathways through demand driven skills development peogrammes and market centric entrepreneurship programme. Sitting (F1) on a panel with Batlile Phaladi & others in the 1st session about The Power of Impactful Branding, the message was clear that entities or individuals ought to the right level of conviction to back themselves in their evolution of skills or product/service provision to deliver a compelling brand promise and remain customer centric. You have to have the audacity in your intent to effect change! The other panel (F2 & F3) was moderated by the awesome Sibu Mabena where we discussed one of the issues I'm deeply passionate about - support and investment in entrepreneurs that can build competitive local and global businesses. The discussions reaffirmed that there's no shortage of capital available for young entrepreneurs but it's the barriers introduced by intermediary issues that make accessibility, affordability and availability of capital such a frustration. Even with the market failures, there are various ecosystem players like us at Mr Price Foundation Mr Price Group & others with efforts to create a pipeline of SMEs with improved investment readiness to access funding - from micro to high growth. Access to market/ entry opportunities are also a function of information asymmetry - we need to build better intersectional rails for youth entrepreneurs to access these existing and future opportunities. Thank you mahlodi makate Innocentia Rakosa Kunene for the invitation and well done on the work! S/O Mnqobi Banele Njoko for being the firestarter. 🫂🙌🏾
