The Ministry of Water and Sanitation, led by Minister Pemmy Majodina, alongside the Rand Water Foundation and Mpumalanga Provincial Government, observed International Women’s Day on Saturday, 08 March 2025 by handing over newly drilled boreholes to the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga.
The boreholes were donated by the Rand Water Foundation, as part of collaborative efforts to address the urgent water needs of the community, particularly women, children, and people with disabilities, who bear the brunt of water scarcity.
This initiative underscores the Ministry’s commitment to fast-tracking water provision and ensuring equitable access to this basic human right. The boreholes serve as an interim solution while the Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply Project, a R2 billion long-term infrastructure project is currently under construction.
In addition to the borehole handover, the Ministry identified Kwathando Care Centre, a Non-Profit Organisation in Kwamhlanga, for the donation of sanitary products and toilet paper. The centre cares for 130 children and persons with disabilities and provides a safe and nurturing environment for some of the most vulnerable members of the community.
Founded in 2008, Kwathando Care Centre is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. The name "Kwathando" means “a place abundant with love” in IsiNdebele, reflecting the centre’s mission to provide care, education, and support to children and persons with disabilities.
The Ministry of Water and Sanitation remains steadfast in its commitment to accelerating water provision and addressing the challenges faced by women, children, and people with disabilities. The Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply Project and the Rand Water Foundation’s borehole initiatives are critical components of this effort, ensuring that no one is left behind in the pursuit of water security.
The delegation also conducted an oversight inspection of packages 2 and 3 of the Loskop Regional Bulk Water Supply Scheme Project.
