The Faculty of Science has a proud tradition of teaching and research that dates back to its earliest beginnings in 1866
About us
The Faculty of Science is respected within South Africa, Africa and the international academic arena as an important knowledge-partner that plays an active role in the development of South African society. The Faculty of Science has eight departments, as well as several world-renowned centres with excellent facilities and established research groups. We offer training in the fundamental sciences: degree programmes in the physical, biological and mathematical sciences. Approximately 30% of our students are postgraduates and we confer a large number of research master’s and doctoral degrees each year. We focus strongly on the publication of our research outputs in international journals of high standing, and make use of National Research Foundation (NRF) ratings as a guide to the recognition of our staff in their respective fields. The Faculty of Science works with the Department of Science and Innovation and numerous other institutions to promote and encourage awareness of the importance of science and technology among society and in our schools. We also contribute to social capacity and the development of people through the establishment of partnerships with schools and science teachers.

Four of SU's women scientists will participate in the South African version of Soapbox Science at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town this Sunday 6 October from 11:00-14:00. Soapbox Science is an initiative that aims to promote the visibility and boost the career prospects of female and non-binary scientists through the establishment of grass-roots, annual public engagement of science events. From Stellenbosch University Dr Marguerite Blignaut will talk about "Organs in a petri dish: attractive alternatives to animal testing in research", while Dr Riana Roux's talk is about how graphs and colours in Applied Mathematics solve scheduling problems. From chemistry, Prof. Catharine Esterhuysen will talk about crystals as sponges and how these tiny objects can have a huge impact on the world. PhD student Dannielle Kenny will focus on antibodies as the unsung heroes in the fight against TB. Good luck to you all and enjoy the engagement! The event is co-hosted by the University of Cape Town Burtram (Bertie) Fielding Sibusiso Moyo Riana Roux Marguerite Blignaut Dannielle Kenny Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Research at Stellenbosch University
