Can you guess what you are looking at in this image? Perhaps some pieces of pottery from an ancient Roman archeological site? Or maybe pieces of coral from a dying reef? If you guessed anything other than the scale deposits (3mm thick!) we removed from the boiler of a coffee machine... you'd be wrong! The customer complained that the water coming out of the coffee machine was not hot enough and sure enough, the inside of the boiler was so calcified, that the heat was not transfering from the element to the water. Simply put, the cost of a boiler descale, element replacement and the extra power consumed as the machine tries to maintain water temperature, is far more than fitting a water filter that can deal with this scale.... and that doesn't include the potential loss of customers due to the poor quality of the water ending up in the cup.
