UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. With a strong presence in SA, we work to improve the life of every child.

About us

With a strong presence in South Africa, UNICEF is a leading advocate for children. We have the global authority to influence decision-makers and the variety of partners at the grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. We believe that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created with this purpose in mind - to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path. UNICEF upholds the Convention of the Rights of the Child. We work to assure equality for those who are discriminated against, girls and women in particular. We work for the Millennium Development Goals and for the progress promised in the United Nations Charter. We strive for peace and security, and work to hold everyone accountable to the promises made for children.

"We are certain that by 2030, our girls will be co-leading with our boys the course to a greater society. As we do that, we must remember our obligation to open the doors of learning for all learners, including learners with sexual and gender diversities," is the inspiring charge that Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube led with as she delivered the opening address at the third annual UN Girls' Education Initiative (UNGEI) Feminist Network for Gender Transformative Education ( #FemNetGTE) on Tuesday in Johannesburg. Globally, gender stereotypes are still limiting opportunities for girls and boys. UNGEI, UNICEF and the South African Departments of Basic Education and Higher Education and Training are bringing together powerful activists, experts, civil society organizations, governments, donors and multilaterals to achieve gender equality in and through education. Themed "From Parity to Quality" the FemNetGTE event this year will establish four Regional Declarations of commitment from Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America and Caribbean, and Middle East and Northern Africa regions. "We are in 2024, and gender equality remains elusive across the globe. In nearly all sectors and industries, due to various factors including persisting gender segregation in employment by occupation, bias toward sexual orientation, categorizing males and females into social roles, gender-based violence, and the list goes on," highlighted UNICEF South Africa Chief of Education, Hana Yoshimoto. "Righting our troubled world depends on effective global action. There must be a reform, there must be a transformation. That is why GTE is adding the value," Yoshimoto added. The Network was developed in partnership with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Echidna Giving. In 2024, the convening is delivered in partnership with UN Women, UNAIDS, UNESCO and the Southern African Development Community. #Genderequality #Education #UnitedNations #UNGEI #UNICEF #UNWomen #UNAIDS #UNESCO #SADC #BMZ #EchidnaGiving

In a country with a high inequality rate as South Africa, a universal social security grant makes sense and can offer the poor and marginalized some universal dignity. UNICEF South Africa, in collaboration with the Social Policy Initiative - SPI, is excited to present the screening and discussion of "A Decent Path 📽 ", a R350 #SocialReliefOfDistress Grant documentary exploring the importance of social assistance in South Africa.   The screening comes against the backdrop of the Special High-Level Meeting, hosted by UNICEF on the sidelines of the September 2024 United Nations General Assembly #UNGA, focusing on proven solutions for four priority issues, one of which was the scaling-up of child benefits. Children and youth in South Africa are vulnerable and greatly affected by unhealthy food systems and insidious marketing aimed at making unhealthy foods appealing to them and their families. They need action now to improve access to healthy, nutritious food and keep preventable non-communicable diseases at bay. Let's all come together to #FixMyFoodZA.

    ENSafrica CA (2025)

Last week Thursday a group of FixMyFood advocates and I participated in an event commemorating nutrition week at the University of the Western Cape. I had the honour of presenting an open letter to the Deputy Minister of Health Dr Joseph Phaahla which expresses our support and encourages his ministry to implement the draft R3337 regulations. The FixMyFood campaign is aimed at raising awareness about marketing tactics which lure consumers especially children into consuming unhealthy foodstuffs. The FixMyFood campaign was created under the partnership of UNICEF South Africa and Bite Back. Our campaign aims to encourage the Minister of Health to implement the draft R3337 regulations which aim to regulate marketing tactics and introduce warning signs in the Front of Package Labelling (FOPL) of unhealthy foodstuffs. My role as a member of the policy and advocacy portfolio in the campaign was to draft an open letter to the Minister of Health which supports the draft regulations of the R3337 and calls for the immediate implementation of the draft regulations. I am happy to share that our first public campaign event was a success as we were joined by various government officials from the department of health, academic researchers, students and advocates from various institutions and civil societies. Please do click on the link below to sign our open letter to the Minister of Health and join a good cause! https://lnkd.in/dxqUb2hb

🧼🤲20 seconds, in between every nook and cranny of the hands. That's all it takes. There has never been any doubt of the importance of handwashing with soap in preventing disease and keeping people healthy. For young children, handwashing is the first line of defence against diarrhoea and other preventable diseases that can be deadly. This simple act can save many lives. #ForEveryChild, hygiene. #GlobalHandwashingDay

Adopting healthy food practices at an early age can pave the way for our present and future health 🥑 🥕 🍇 . However, the current food environment in South Africa is flooded with ultra-processed foods and this makes healthy options difficult to access. As we commemorate #NationalNutritionWeek (#NNW) - observed annually from 9 to 15 October – we are reminded of the critical need to promote healthy eating practices and options to ensure a healthier future, #ForEveryChild. #FixMyFoodZA

A lot of dedication, passion, and sacrifice goes into the work done by our UNICEF volunteers across South Africa to positively impact the lives of children and young people on their local campuses and communities. This recognition is a testament to that and a welcome effort to recognise the importance of young people's role in volunteerism here and around the world. #WeAreUNICEF 💙

UNICEF NWU honored the North-West University / Noordwes-Universiteit student life invitation to attend the 2nd annual Arts & Culture awards ceremony. We bagged an award under the category "Bet Community Outreach Program". This award reflects the efforts made by each UNICEF volunteer and executive member towards our 2024 Health & Nutrition advocay under UNICEF South Africa. I would be lying if I said I was surprised that we received this award, UNICEF flexed muscles this year. What a way to get to the close of this chapter. I will share more about the experience soon!! #ForEveryChild #SoarForSuccess
