🎊Global Handwashing Day: Why are clean hands still important? Tomorrow 📆October 15th is Global Handwashing Day, an event to promote 👐handwashing with soap and water as an easy, effective, and affordable way to prevent disease and save lives. This year’s commemoration is especially important for Zambia which has suffered one of the worst droughts in decades increasing the risk of 🦠diseases such as cholera. This year’s Global Handwashing Day theme reflects an important question, “Why are clean hands still important?” The theme reminds us that clean hands remain a fundamental defence against the spread of infections, illnesses, and harmful germs. Whether in hospitals, schools, or in everyday interactions, practicing handwashing with soap contributes to better health outcomes and a safer world for everyone. To highlight the critical importance of clean hands in Zambia, the GIZ Zambia (Water and Energy Cluster) through the German Government (BMZ) funded Strengthening Institutions for Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation in Zambia Project (SIWaS), is tomorrow joining Zambia’s Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation and other key water sector stakeholders to commemorate the Global Handwashing Day. The celebrations will be held at 📍Chitanda Primary school in Matero Township of Lusaka to enhance community 📢sensitization and access to adequate handwashing facilities in the densely populated area. SIWaS remains committed to supporting the implementation of national targets for improved 🚽🚰WASH in urban and rural areas in a coordinated manner. #StrongerTogether #GlobalHandwashingDay2021 #PreventionIsBetterThanCure #cleanhands #accessforall #LeaveNoOneBehind #SDG2030

Let's celebrate girls 🎉 - 11th October is the International Day of the Girl Child  👧   Despite many efforts over the last decades, girls are still disproportionately affected worldwide by global crises such as climate change, conflict, and poverty. Too many girls are still denied their rights, restricting their choices and limiting their futures.   Globally, every fifth girl is still married before their 18th birthday leading to an increased risk of early pregnancies and gender-based violence. 119 million girls are out of school. But where girls are given equal opportunities and full enjoyment of their rights, societies become more just, peaceful and poverty reduces.   GIZ Zambia under the "Strengthening Girls' Rights!" project is aiming to improve the lives of girls and young women in Zambia by strengthening their access to sexual and reproductive health and rights. We support both girls and boys at health facilities and schools. We work with parents and religious and traditional actors so that young people can enjoy quality services free from stigma and discrimination. This can only be achieved through the valuable cooperation with governmental and non-governmental actors that the project has built over the last years. #InternationalDayOfTheGirlChild #GirlsRights #EmpowerGirls

🌿 Agricultural Finance Lessons Learned in Eastern Province🌿 On August 20, 2024, the GIZ Zambia AgFin project, commissioned by BMZ and in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, hosted a Lessons Learned Workshop in Chipata. The event brought together key stakeholders from financial institutions, farmers, government officials, and key agricultural actors to reflect on the successes and challenges of the project in Eastern Province. As the project team wraps up active implementation in the region, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all collaborators for their exceptional teamwork over the past years. With the AgFin project in Zambia, set to conclude in July 2025, capturing these insights is crucial for ensuring sustainability and long-term impact. Here are 5 Key Lessons we’ve learned along the way: 1️. Financial Literacy is the Key to Empowerment  Training through the Farmer Financial Cycle or Agriculture Business and Investment Training has helped farmers manage their farms as successful businesses. The skills they have gained have opened doors to financial services and business growth.  ➡️ Lesson: Continuous financial literacy training is essential for sustainable growth.  2️. Bridging the Gap Between Farmers & Financial Institutions is Vital  One of the biggest achievements was connecting farmers directly with financial service providers. Linkage meetings helped create trust and understanding, but there’s still work to be done, farmers need easier access to finance with fewer barriers like high collateral requirements.  ➡️ Lesson: Building strong, ongoing relationships between farmers and banks ensures long-term financial access.  3️. Collaboration is the Secret to Success  The strength of this project came from collaboration across sectors—between the Ministry of Agriculture, agri-businesses, financial institutions, and farmers. By working together, we have created tailored financial products that fit the needs of smallholder farmers.  ➡️ Lesson: Cross-sector partnerships create lasting inclusive solutions.  4️. Sustainability Depends on Ongoing Support  Farmers have highlighted the importance of continuous learning, regular follow-ups and refresher courses to reinforce their skills. Support from institutions and government is critical to help farmers continue applying what they have learned.  ➡️ Lesson: Continued mentorship and capacity building are essential for sustaining progress.  5️. Tailored Solutions yield the best results  From small loans to digital finance, AgFin helped develop 20 tailor-made products designed for the specific needs of farmers. These solutions have had a strong impact, however, there is still room for more customization, especially with loan terms and collateral.  ➡️ Lesson: Flexible, tailored products that reflect farmers’ unique challenges create the best results.   As we continue this journey, let's keep these lessons in mind to ensure lasting impact for the Zambian farmers. #GIZ #AgFin

High level water forum accelerates equitable access to water and sanitation in 🇿🇲Zambia [Multi-stakeholder taskforce formed to spearhead and implement key resolutions] The Government of Zambia through the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation (MWDS) and Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) has resolved to enhance operational collaboration, and clarity on roles and responsibilities particularly for rural water supply and sanitation for equitable access to water and sanitation in Zambia To highlight their commitment, a communique outlining the key resolutions was signed by the MWDS Minister Hon Eng. Collins Nzovu and the MLGRD Minister Hon Gary Nkombo, during a high-level water and sanitation forum hosted in Lusaka on Wednesday last week. This signing was witnessed by the European Union’s Head of Development Cooperation, Mr. Claudio Bacigalupi, the German Ambassador to Zambia, Her Excellency Dr. Anne Wagner Mitchell, as well as the lead cooperating partner, African Development Bank’s Water and Sanitation Manager, Mr. Mecuria Assefaw. The signing of the communique marks a very significant milestone for the EU, Germany and UNICEF funded Nexus for Energy and Water in Zambia Programme (NEWZA), which among other things aims to significantly enhance the operational and financial performance of five major water utilities across Zambia. This effort aligns with one of the key module objectives under the GIZ component of NEWZA, in close collaboration with MWDS. The two Ministers emphasised the need for Zambia to accelerate its efforts towards ensuring equitable access to water and adequate sanitation, through collaboration to avoid duplication of efforts among stakeholders. “This will streamline the roles and responsibilities of all actors and provide a progressive route of achieving equitable access to water supply and sanitation with a focus on rural water supply and sanitation and onsite sanitation/faecal sludge management,” they said. The well-attended water forum brought together key stakeholders from the sector including National Water Supply and Sanitation Council (NWASCO), Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA), Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), Provincial Water Supply and Sanitation Officers, Provincial Local Government Officers and Local Government Engineers, Managing Directors from Commercial Utilities across Zambia, Local Authority Town Clerks and Cooperating Partners among other institutional representatives. The event also provided a platform for the Development Bank of Germany (KfW) to host the Minister of Finance, Dr. Situmbeko Musokotwane for the signing of their NEWZA financing agreement. The second day of the event also facilitated the launch of three key policy documents by the Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation: National Water Policy, National Adaptation Plan Resource Mobilisation Strategy, and the WASH Equity and Inclusion Guideline. #TeamEurope #WASH #Water

🌾 Empowering Farmers to Combat Fall Armyworm with Agroecological Innovations 🌾 The Agroecological Innovations for Smallholder Pest Management (EcoPM) project, in partnership with the ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, is promoting sustainable solutions for Fall Armyworm (FAW) management. The project advances four key innovations: push-pull technology as a climate-smart pest management solution, biological control using parasitoids, fungal-based biopesticides, and pheromone traps for monitoring FAW populations. EcoPM focuses on a farmer-centered approach by fostering participatory learning and ownership 🧑🌾. Through training sessions, farmers gain the skills to establish demonstration plots, serving as hubs for continuous learning and adoption of sustainable pest management practices. A recent field day highlighted the power of this approach, as farmers gathered to learn from a demo host farmer using biopesticide and push-pull technologies. The host farmer's knowledge and enthusiasm inspired peers to explore these sustainable practices and adopt them in their own fields. This event demonstrated the crucial role of farmer-to-farmer learning in boosting pest resilience and strengthening food security. 🤝 #EcoPM #SustainableFarming #FarmerInnovation #ClimateSmart #FoodSecurity
