Last week, as part of Climate Week NYC, we hosted a breakfast focused on Scaling Energy Storage & Long-Duration Batteries. As part of a broader research project with E.ON UK, the New York session delved into three main topics: 1) The bankability of energy trading as key to battery financing 2) Unlocking a carbon finance policy toolbox across short-duration & long-duration technologies 3) Building credible modelling and data availability to help evaluate interventions and ecosystem decision-making. Unlocking Uganda's Climate Potential - Carbon Finance Dialogue 🇺🇬 🌍 ⚡️ 🌳 As part of Climate Week in New York, we helped to convene a high-level briefing with the Uganda Ministry of Water & Environment to discuss the role that the carbon markets play in delivering the nation's NDCs. Under Uganda’s current NDC targets, it aims to reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 24.7% below business-as-usual levels by 2030. The total cost of implementing its NDC is estimated at US$28.1 billion, which will rely on domestic budgets and international capital. Step in carbon finance, which can help to play an immediate role to close this financing gap and monetise the country's efforts in reforestation, sustainable agriculture, and renewable energy expansion. During the dialogue, we discussed steps to deliver a credible carbon markets governance framework to get capital to where it is needed most. These included: 1) Clear Regulatory Frameworks 2) Capacity Building 3) Investor Confidence 4) Partnerships with Multilateral Organisations 5) Transparent Monitoring, Reporting and Verification 6) Engagement with local communities & Co-benefits A big thank you to our hosts, keynotes and guests, including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Maktoum Bin Juma Al Maktoum, Chairman of East Africa Investment Group who shared his unique perspectives. Our breakfast will discuss policy recommendations and new carbon finance instruments for industrial-use batteries and energy storage solutions.
