The ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) provides different certifications and stamps for various aspects of engineering, including pressure vessels and boilers. The ASME U and R stamps specifically refer to different types of certifications related to pressure vessels. 1. ASME U Stamp: The ASME U stamp is a certification for pressure vessels. It indicates that the manufacturer has designed and fabricated the pressure vessel in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section VIII Division 1, which outlines the requirements for the construction of pressure vessels. The U stamp signifies that the vessel has been designed, manufactured, inspected, and tested in compliance with the rigorous standards set forth by the ASME. 2. ASME R Stamp: The ASME R stamp, on the other hand, is a certification for repair and alteration of pressure vessels. It indicates that an organization is authorized to repair and alter pressure vessels in accordance with the National Board Inspection Code (NBIC), which provides guidelines for the inspection, repair, and alteration of pressure-retaining items, including pressure vessels. The R stamp signifies that the organization has demonstrated the necessary knowledge, capabilities, and quality control procedures to perform repairs and alterations on pressure vessels. In summary, the ASME U stamp is related to the design and fabrication of new pressure vessels, while the ASME R stamp is associated with the repair and alteration of existing pressure vessels.

The four crack types Type I Crack: These cracks are longitudinal cracks that run parallel to the weld direction. They typically occur in the weld metal itself and are caused by shrinkage during solidification Type II Crack: These are also longitudinal cracks, but they run in the HAZ adjacent to the weld metal. They are caused by reheating of the base metal during welding, which can cause grain coarsening and reduced ductility Type III Crack: These are transverse cracks that run perpendicular to the weld direction. They can occur in the HAZ or the weld metal. Slug Catchers Slug Catcher is the name of a unit in the gas refinery or petroleum industry in which slugs at the outlet of pipelines are collected or caught. A slug is a large quantity of a liquid that exists in a multi-phase pipeline. Pipelines that transport both gas and liquids together, known as two-phase flow, can operate in a flow regime known as slugging flow or slug flow. Under the influence of gravity, liquids will tend to settle on the bottom of the pipeline, while the gases occupy the top section of the pipeline. Under certain operating conditions gas and liquid are not evenly distributed throughout the pipeline, but travel as large plugs with mostly liquids or mostly gases through the pipeline. These large plugs are called slugs. Slugs exiting the pipeline can overload the gas/liquid handling capacity of the plant at the pipeline outlet, as they are often produced at a much larger rate than the equipment is designed for. A slug catcher is a vessel with sufficient buffer volume to store the largest slugs expected from the upstream system. The slug catcher is located between the outlet of the pipeline and the processing equipment. The buffered liquids can be drained to the processing equipment at a much slower rate to prevent overloading the system. As slugs are a periodical phenomenon, the slug catcher should be emptied before the next slug arrives. Slug catchers can be used continuously or on-demand. A slug catcher permanently connected to the pipeline will buffer all production, including the slugs, before it is sent to the gas and liquid handling facilities. This is used for difficult to predict slugging behaviour found in terrain slugging, hydrodynamic slugging or riser-based slugging. Alternatively, the slug catcher can be bypassed in normal operation and be brought online when a slug is expected, usually during pigging operations. An advantage of this set-up is that inspection and maintenance on the slug catcher can be done without interrupting the normal operation. Inspection Openings – Quick Guide ------------------------------------------- UG-46 should be read in its entirety – a few brief points: UG-46(a) – Vessels with compressed air or with corrosion, or with erosion, or with mechanical abrasion need inspection openings. Exemptions: Air dried to atmospheric dew point -50°F or lower, Shell side of fixed tube heat exchangers Non-corrosive service Interpretations Some interpretations from https://lnkd.in/dHd7AJnz. Refer to the actual interpretations for the full text. Caution- old interpretations remain even after they have been superseded by code changes that render them obsolete. VIII-81-56 and VIII-77-11 – it is the users job to determine if a service is corrosive (caution: VIII-1-04-15 and VIII-1-07-63 define under what conditions air is considered non-corrosive) VIII-1-04-15, VIII-1-07-63 and VIII-1-89-93 – exemption per UG-46(a) for air, dried to -50°F and not VIII-1-86-31 – inspection openings are not required for non-corrosive service VIII-1-83-264 – if openings are to be used for inspection, the plugs must be supplied by the manufacturer VIII-1-83-336 – any size vessel can be non-corrosive and flexibility in sizing of openings VIII-1-83-358 – what qualifies as an inspection opening (this interpretation is probably superseded by code changes made in 1987) VIII-77-101 – inspection openings for heat exchangers and telltale holes (very old, probably superseded by code changes to UG-46 directly related to heat exchangers and use of telltale holes) VIII-80-93 – configuration of threaded openings rec 14-2223 – inspection nozzle size limits for cold-stretched vessels rec 15-748 – understanding UG-46 opening size requirements VIII-1-01-122  – corrosive service requires inspection openings even if the corrosion allowance is zero VIII-1-92-136, VIII-79-12 and VIII-1-95-115 – substitution of inspection nozzle sizes, and non-corrosive service VIII-1-95-46 – if a corrosion allowance is specified, then the service is corrosive unless otherwise stated on the MDR PTB-4 “ASME Section VIII – Division 1 Example Problem Manual” PTB-4-2013 provides example E4.5.5 which briefly discusses exemptions to UG-45 rules for inspection only openings.
