🙏 Sawasdee from Bangkok! Michael Friedl has joined ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA Thailand as the new Austrian Trade Commissioner in Summer 2024. Having been part of the ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA network since 1999, he navigated the dynamic ecosystems in ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA offices in New York, Tehran, Washington DC, Abu Dhabi, and Johannesburg. Together with his team, he will be responsible for expanding the economic relations between Austria and Thailand but also covering the countries of Cambodia, Myanmar and Laos. During his first two months in Bangkok, the team has already introduced Michael to various industry leaders and Austrian subsidiaries. Together they initiated business opportunities, connected with Austrian companies at several trade fairs, and witnessed a Memorandum of Understanding signing in the Thai Austrian Technical College. Moreover, they even found time to explore the vibrant Thai culture as well and had Pad Krapow (Thai Basil Stir-fry) for a team lunch. With this, Austria is taking a leading role internationally in modern training within the catering industry. With the new apprenticeship, catering businesses can respond to the trend towards vegetarian and vegan diets among their guests. According to a survey by Smart Protein Project, 44% of Austrians follow a vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian, or flexitarian diet and avoid or greatly reduce the consumption of animal-based foods - and the trend is rising. The vegetarian-vegan cookery apprenticeship makes the profession of cook accessible to all those who have previously ruled out an apprenticeship in the catering industry due to their personal dietary habits. As part of the apprenticeship, trainees do not have to handle meat. This makes the program accessible to those who do not eat an omnivorous diet. 🤖 For a more sustainable textile industry: Austrian research organisation JOANNEUM RESEARCH is developing the software for a new robotic system to automate clothing sorting. The "CoboSort" project, part of a multi-country effort with collaborators in Italy, Spain, and Romania, addresses the challenge of handling large volumes of returned and unused clothing by reducing manual labour and increasing efficiency. The robot uses a combination of image recognition sensors, grippers, and artificial intelligence to automatically sort textiles, regardless of their packaging. This is particularly important in the age of e-commerce, where large numbers of returns often arrive improperly packaged. By training the robot through an intuitive interface, workers can transition from repetitive tasks to roles that involve overseeing and correcting the system, thus fostering a collaborative environment between humans and machines. This technology could lead to new business models that reduce raw material use and waste, as it allows for the effective reuse and recycling of garments. The modular design of the robot enables flexible and decentralized sorting processes, potentially lowering costs and minimizing the environmental impact associated with continuous textile production. 💪 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗫𝗫𝗟: The Austria House at the Paralympics has previously been hosted in a golf club and the clubhouse of a football club, but Paris 2024 goes one step further: an entire rugby stadium (!) has become the red-white-red hot spot during the Games! The Austria House at the Paralympics in Paris is a joint project of the Austrian Paralympic Committee and the Deutscher Behindertensportverband e.V. - National Paralympic Committee Germany, named the "House of Friends". The opening took place on August 29th. The hosting Jean Bouin Stadium is the home ground of the French rugby club Stade Français Paris and is located in the immediate vicinity of Roland Garros, where the wheelchair tennis players compete. The Austria House combines sports and the athletes of the Paralympic Team Austria with networking opportunities for representatives from sports, politics, tourism, and business. "Our guests from Austria, France, and around the world can look forward to a very special atmosphere – and for our athletes, it is a piece of home in the heart of Paris", says Maria Rauch-Kallat, president of the Austrian Paralympic Committee.
