Austroads has published a comprehensive report highlighting the importance of median barriers to mitigate the risk of head-on crashes on high-speed, two-lane roads in Australia and New Zealand. Head-on collisions frequently result in significant impact forces, making them more likely to cause serious injuries than other types of vehicle crashes. The report advocates for a Safe System approach, which aims to eliminate deaths and serious injuries on our roads by preventing exposure to harmful forces. Safe System principles underpin the design and operation of roads in Australia and New Zealand. https://lnkd.in/gYq8w6Yx

Supporting our members to deliver an improved Australasian road transport network.
About us
Austroads is the peak organisation of Australasian road transport and traffic agencies. Austroads members are collectively responsible for the management of over 900,000 kilometres of roads valued at more than $200 billion representing the single largest community asset in Australia and New Zealand. Austroads’ purpose is to support our member organisations to deliver an improved Australasian road transport network. One that meets the future needs of the community, industry and economy. A road network that is safer for all users and provides vital and reliable connections to place and people. A network that uses resources wisely and is mindful of its impact on the environment. To succeed in this task, we undertake leading-edge road and transport research which underpins our input to policy development and published guidance on the design, construction and management of the road network and its associated infrastructure. We also administer the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System (NEVDIS), a unique national system which enables road authorities to interact across state borders and directly supports the transport and automotive industries. Austroads provides a collective approach that delivers value for money, encourages shared knowledge and drives consistency for road users.

#Austroads today announced the release of the updated Lifeline Risk Indicator Tool, an online resource designed to enhance road connectivity for rural and remote communities across Australia and New Zealand. Lifeline routes ensure communities remain connected when alternative routes are cut-off due to natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes. Investing in lifeline routes does not always stack up using a traditional cost-benefit analysis, but Austroads members know these routes are crucial to ensuring safety and support during a crisis. Join us for a webinar on Wednesday 23 October 2024 with Ben Mason, Stacy Rendall and Valentin Perez to hear how the tool was updated and watch a practical run-through. #LifelineRoutes #CommunityResilience #FreightTransport #Infrastructure

#Austroads has released new arrangements for the transition of overseas issued driver and motorcycle rider licences to Australian licences. The new process has been designed with strengthened assessment criteria, greater clarity regarding mandatory requirements and a focus on a Safe System approach. Tourists visiting Australia will continue to be able to drive or ride a motorcycle on Australian roads if they hold a valid overseas licence. The changes apply to drivers and motorcycle riders permanently residing in Australia who are 25 years of age or older and who hold a licence issued by a country on the Experienced Driver Recognition list. Experienced Driver Recognition status will cease on 30 April 2025 and these drivers/motorcycle riders will likely have to undertake further training and testing before they can be issued with an Australian licence. ℹ️ Click on the link in the post to find out more. #driverlicence #roadsafety #road2zero Michael Nieuwesteeg Judy Oswin Paul Rajan

Geoff Allan, #Austroads Chief Executive, addressed global experts in road infrastructure #decarbonisation yesterday. The workshop, co-organised by NTRO - National Transport Research Organisation and Austroads and facilitated by PIARC - World Road Association Technical Committee 3.5, was an opportunity for panellists and attendees to share knowledge on the progress made to decarbonise the transport industry. With road freight and passenger transport representing 75% of global land transport emissions, Austroads understands the importance of updating road design practices in Australia to provide for modern and emerging vehicles. Some of the work underway includes Austroads project NEF6394 which is researching the needs of the modern freight task and project CAV6426 which will provide road asset owners and industry with new guidance on implementing electric vehicle chargers in remote and rural areas.

Austroads reposted this
Austroads' credentials get noticed - It is not often that Australia’s premier website for the public sector, The Mandarin, runs articles on Austroads. But to have two articles in a month gives an indication of the significance of the work Austroads is doing. The achievements that were made public last week have only been realised because of the magnificent work and commitment of the Austroads team, the encouragement and active engagement of our members who run the state and territory driver licensing agencies, the encouragement and engagement of senior staff of government customer service agencies and the support of our international partners, particularly AAMVA. I look forward to The Mandarin covering the next phases of this endeavour.
