For Tamara Linwood, the path to engineering started with a spark of curiosity. Encouraged by her parents, she explored science through books, LEGO, and Australian Geographic kits. A standout high school physics teacher and hands-on programs like the Engineering Link Group solidified her love for STEM. An unforgettable rail engineering experience in China during her school years sealed the deal - engineering was not just a career choice; it was her calling. Since joining BG&E in 2021, Tamara has thrived in an environment that values growth and opportunity. She appreciates BG&E's approachable management team, who have supported her in attending industry events and gaining exposure to new technical areas and projects. This year, she is taking part in the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Future Leaders Program: "I'm excited to enhance my leadership skills and expand my industry network through the program." Tamara stepped into the role of Rail Design Lead for the Somerton Intermodal Terminal in Victoria, a project of national significance as Australia's largest intermodal terminal. The design phase was anything but straightforward – for example, dual gauge tracks demanded custom turnout designs to cater to standard and broad gauge operations. Tamara embraced the challenge, navigating technical complexities and collaborating across disciplines, stakeholders, and construction teams. Her efforts will ensure the terminal connects seamlessly to existing ARTC and MTM networks, leaving her mark on a project to push the boundaries of Australia's rail infrastructure. Tamara advises aspiring engineers to make the most of every opportunity that comes their way—whether it's furthering their professional development or expanding their industry network. Learning from the experienced engineers around them and consistently seeking new challenges will help propel their careers forward and set them up for long-term success. We’ve just wrapped up the last two big lifts at Te Kaha Stadium! Over the past few months, our suggested change in sequencing assembly helped shave at least four weeks off the program while saving a significant amount of steel and temporary foundation work. A massive effort from the team on site to make it happen. Check out the progress in the photos and reach out if you’re after excellence in your engineering designs. Last week, our London office celebrated the Lunar New Year with a lively event. The team enjoyed traditional food and drinks, tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy, and tackled a trivia challenge. Prizes went to the best Year of the Snake artwork, adding to the fun. It was a great way to share cultural traditions and bring the team together—one of the many ways BG&E embraces its diverse community.

BG&E were the first engineers to introduce the bridge incremental launch construction method to Australia in 1985. Since then, BG&E has designed over 30 bridges using this technique - and we are proud to say that no other consulting firm in Australia matches our expertise and experience in incremental launching. We used this technique ten years ago to design and deliver the Yandhai Nepean River Crossing. This award-winning project provides the community with a safe, dedicated footbridge and cycle path and stunning views of the Nepean River and surrounding areas in Western Sydney. BG&E, alongside Roads Maritime Services (Transport for NSW), provided the detailed design of the 200m bridge, featuring a 10m deep steel Warren truss with complex geometry, including two reverse curves (which were later made straight). We developed a unique and precise construction approach called ‘node-by-node’ launching to overcome these challenges. This method articulates and shifts the truss at each node using jacks and rolling skates, ensuring accuracy and control. Through close collaboration with Seymour Whyte, Roads & Maritime Services and Freyssinet, we delivered a structure that meets all technical and safety requirements and blends seamlessly into the natural landscape, minimising impact on recreational users. #InnovationInBridgeDesign #CommunityConnectivity #EngineeringExcellence #BGEEngineering Joe Turner
