More than 1,300kg of rubbish, made up of mostly small plastics, has been collected from the Burnett River over three days by the fantastic team at Ocean Crusaders. Their work is part of our Waterways Rubbish Removal program, funded by the Reef Authority, and is all part of efforts in delivering real outcomes for the Great Barrier Reef. Council is inviting current and former workers, community members and visitors to share their stories of East Water Tower, as part of the conservation management plan for the site. East Water Tower has been a significant visual landmark in Bundaberg for over 100 years, and many people in the community have strong ties to the iconic structure. Constructed in 1902, East Water Tower is the tallest circular brick water tower remaining in Queensland and was a key element in Bundaberg’s first reticulated water system. The community’s personal stories and memories will help Council to understand and celebrate the tower’s importance to the social history of the Bundaberg Region. Last week our Natural Areas team joined forces with Yourtown trainees for Clean Up Australia Day, removing litter from Queens Park to prevent rubbish from entering the Burnett River. Local businesses, community groups and accommodation providers can help shape the future of the region’s tourism industry by providing feedback as part of the Hotel Demand Study! Tourism and Hospitality Services Australia (THSA), on behalf of Council, has launched five surveys targeted at accommodation providers, professional conference and event organisers, business and community groups, hotel guests, and visitors.
