Bus Industry Confederation
Ground Passenger Transportation
BIC is the national peak body advocating on behalf of the Australian bus and coach industry.
About us
Our vision is to enhance the sustainability and liveability of Australia’s cities and regions by moving people using bus and coach transportation. We aim to do this by representing the collective interests of our members and to assist them in promoting the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of bus and coach transport in Australia. We want to to ensure that the businesses in our industry are protected from poor government policy and to actively advocate for better and increased public transport and school services, growth in tour, charter, long distance and other commercial bus and coach services and increased infrastructure funding. Much of what we do is ensure that governments keep our moving people task top of mind when implementing policy decisions on transport, our cities and regions, and how money is spent. Our aim is to keep growing public transport so that buses and coaches move more passengers and provide more services, along with growing the tourism, charter and commercial side of bus and coach businesses. This has a direct impact on the profitability and viability of operators, manufacturers, component suppliers and professional services to the bus and coach industry. Daily, we're charged with making sure that the bus and coach industry continues to have a major role in national and state planning for our Australian communities, cities and regional centres. We also put a lot of effort into on-the-ground issues – both technical and operational – that impact the day-to-day business of bus operators, manufacturers and suppliers.

Business Sydney today hosted a packed breakfast forum at which Peter Achterstraat, NSW Productivity and Equality Commissioner was the keynote speaker. Peter, a family friend, outlined the important role of the NSW Productivity and Equality Commission and interestingly commented that the use of e-bikes should be limited to short trips to link with access to public transport. Outstanding Executive Director of Business Sydney, Paul Nicolaou, in a panel session, lamented that the reason productivity is on the decrease throughout the country is that business has to deal with up to eight government departments, including transport, across all States, territories and federal to get anything done. Colleague, John Robertson, chair of icare, and I later enjoy catching up with Peter. A great opportunity to catch up with reps from the heavy freight sector, rail, aviation and maritime. There are a lot of similarities in relation to the issues our industries face such as an ageing workforce, recruitment and training issues. However, only the bus industry seems to be confronted with the impact of antisocial behaviour on our workforce.
Industry Skills Australia’s roundtable in Canberra on 30 October, brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from industry, government, and training providers to engage in a lively conversation about Transport and Logistics workforce development challenges and future prospects. With the current shortage of skilled workers, especially truck drivers, the need to attract, train, and retain talent is pressing. We discussed ways to engage young people early on, such as promoting the industry’s opportunities in schools and providing practical experiences through site visits to real workplaces. As the workforce ages, retaining the invaluable knowledge and experience of senior professionals is critical. Their mentorship can be pivotal in training the next generation, helping bridge skills gaps and ensure smooth succession. Adapting to evolving expectations of younger generations of workers, especially around diversity, flexibility, and well-being, was another focus. Addressing mental health, fatigue management, and providing robust support systems by employers can help create a safer and more attractive industry. Consistency across state regulations and fostering diversity - especially by attracting more women to the workforce - were highlighted as paths to improving both safety and inclusivity. Recognition of foreign licences and skilled immigration can also address some of the key occupational areas but this needs to be managed carefully without compromising safety standards. Support from government initiatives, including apprenticeships and traineeships, can further empower the industry to meet these goals. Ultimately, collaboration across industry bodies, employers, and government is key to driving meaningful change and advancing workforce sustainability in Transport and Logistics, Rail, Maritime and Aviation sectors. We express our sincere gratitude to participants in Canberra for sharing such rich and valuable insights into the challenges raised in our 2024 Workforce Plans. These insights will help inform the development of our 2025 Workforce Plans. If you were unable to attend a roundtable, you can still have your say by reaching out to our team directly or by providing your thoughts via the survey on our website: https://lnkd.in/gumRa3P2 #Transport #Logistics #Maritime #Rail #Aviation #WorkforcePlans
