Bus Industry Confederation
Ground Passenger Transportation
BIC is the national peak body advocating on behalf of the Australian bus and coach industry.
About us
Our vision is to enhance the sustainability and liveability of Australia’s cities and regions by moving people using bus and coach transportation. We aim to do this by representing the collective interests of our members and to assist them in promoting the safety, efficiency and effectiveness of bus and coach transport in Australia. We want to to ensure that the businesses in our industry are protected from poor government policy and to actively advocate for better and increased public transport and school services, growth in tour, charter, long distance and other commercial bus and coach services and increased infrastructure funding. Much of what we do is ensure that governments keep our moving people task top of mind when implementing policy decisions on transport, our cities and regions, and how money is spent. Our aim is to keep growing public transport so that buses and coaches move more passengers and provide more services, along with growing the tourism, charter and commercial side of bus and coach businesses. This has a direct impact on the profitability and viability of operators, manufacturers, component suppliers and professional services to the bus and coach industry. Daily, we're charged with making sure that the bus and coach industry continues to have a major role in national and state planning for our Australian communities, cities and regional centres. We also put a lot of effort into on-the-ground issues – both technical and operational – that impact the day-to-day business of bus operators, manufacturers and suppliers.

The Bus Industry Confederation has been part of the #reform process for the #HeavyVehicle National Law since the beginning a number of years ago. The reforms are now reaching the pointy end and we will be preparing a submission on behalf of the industry to ensure that the interest of #busandcoach operators, manufacturers and suppliers are protected. There are some very important parts of this reform for our industry related to #fatigue and fitness to drive. We will be hosting a webinar with the National Transport Commission to keep our members informed - stay tuned for more details.
An exposure draft of the updated Heavy Vehicle National Law and related penalties under the law are now open for consultation via our website. The consultation aims to ensure the draft law reflects the 26 policy changes agreed by Australia's transport ministers over the past 12 months. The NTC thanks the heavy vehicle industry for investing their time and effort into developing an updated law that makes the industry safer and more productive. Members of our Reform Advisory Committee have played a key role giving us a clear line of site to industry priorities. Our future law will deliver more effective, flexible regulation, support improvements to safety and productivity, as well as streamline governance and administration. You can find out more on our website or read a summary. https://lnkd.in/gVqb327a

Bus Industry Confederation reposted this
At the BusNSW Conference, a panel discussion prompted Ian MacDonald asked me a tough question: “What would you do if a customer spat on you?” What would you do? We were discussing the daily challenges faced by bus drivers and the changing nature of community behaviour. Drivers regularly endure spitting, verbal abuse, physical assault threats, and sometimes, even violence. These unacceptable behaviours have contributed to driver shortages, as highlighted in the recent Bus Industry Confederation recruitment and retention report (https://lnkd.in/gMA-znvd). One of the report findings is - 'Drivers increasingly feel unappreciated,' and the constant assaults are taking a toll on their mental health. While the government and operators are working to address these issues, we all have a role to play. During the COVID-19 pandemic, bus drivers kept our communities moving and maintained a sense of normalcy when everything else was uncertain. They were rightly hailed as heroes. As John King, President of BusNSW, pointed out, some drivers went beyond their duties—using their buses to deliver learning materials from schools to students' homes. If that doesn’t underscore the value of the industry, what does? Bus drivers deserve better. So to my LinkedIn colleagues if use the bus, a simple “thank you, driver” could go a long way. You might just help preserve your driver and your bus route with that small gesture of appreciation.
