It was great to have the opportunity to host the Australasian College of Road Safety - SA Chapter in our 🚗 impact laboratory on Wednesday. Thank you to the ACRS-SA Chapter committee members, Philip Blake, Matthew Vertudaches, Tana Tan (PhD) and Jamie Mackenzie for facilitating this visit. CASR was honoured to have the Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith and our founder Emeritus Professor Jack McLean both there for the occasion. 🙂
Dr Jack McLean has been called the "father of road safety in Australia" and has been credited with arguably saving more lives than any other South Australian. Quite simply, Jack is a hero. Jack founded the Road Accident Research Centre in 1973 and quickly established the centre as one of the country's leaders in investigating crashes of all types, from heavy vehicle collisions to motorist and pedestrian fatalities, across metro and rural areas. By reviewing early case studies, Jack was able to spot the major factors that contributed to the state's climbing road toll and direct research towards finding solutions. He's coordinated studies looking at alcohol impairment, road infrastructure and how vehicle design can be improved to protect pedestrians. On top of all this, Jack has been instrumental in shaping road safety policy and recognised globally for his knowledge and work. It was wonderful to reunite with Jack after many years at the University of Adelaide's Centre for Automotive Safety Research (CASR) in Kent Town this week, where I was given a tour and got to see a crash test simulation in action. CASR research continues to improve safety on our roads, underscoring the importance of Jack's work more than 50 years on.

Excited to share that CASR has completed a significant study for the AA Research Foundation, focusing on enhancing New Zealand's licensing system to better support novice drivers. We examined how New Zealand’s driver licensing system compares internationally and identified several key measures that could greatly improve safety for new drivers. Looking forward to connecting with others on this important topic! The full report can be downloaded from the Centre for Automotive Safety Research website⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gSrPCUQQ or on the AA New Zealand website ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/g99TSWHK

👋 One month ago, we bid farewell to the 18 professionals taking part in the South Asia Regional Infrastructure Connectivity (SARIC) Road Safety Management Training Program. It was a pleasure to collaborate with our peers at the Professional and Continuing Education at the University of Adelaide and Palladium: Make It Possible to bring this Program to life. ✨Highlights included site visits with Motor Trade Association of SA/NT and Department for Infrastructure and Transport; a presentation from Carla Hoorweg, CEO @ANCAP SAFETY; a panel discussion with Department for Infrastructure and Transport , South Australia Police and Lifetime Support Authority of South Australia; and an industry networking lunch. SARIC is supported by Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
