Award-winning Coogee Live may have been smashing it since 2017 in the free Australian community festival stakes, but the two-day event continues to chalk up its fair share of firsts every year. More than 20,000 people flocked to Cockburn’s iconic Coogee Beach on the weekend, and they weren’t disappointed! In an Australian record, 150 merfolk gathered at Coogee Beach as part of the third annual Great Mermaid Migration. With more than 130 free activities across two days, the excitement was real. This year for the first time we provided a Youth Disability Advocacy Network Inc. - YDAN Low Sensory Space to provide an opportunity for a calming break from the stimulating atmosphere, before getting back out there. Attendees continued to show their support for the City’s efforts to provide wastewise events, using 34,000 reusable plates, bowls cups and cutlery, and saving tens of thousands of single-use food and beverage containers from ending up in landfill. We also welcomed to WA for the first time, Melbourne-based Erth Divers recognised internationally as an innovator in visual theatre, the WA Youth Jazz Orchestra and Noongar/Jingili rapper Zero Emcee, and Wisdom Keepers – the Untold Stories of the Community, featuring photographic portraits of Cockburn residents by WA Portrait Photographer of the Year, Nic Duncan. Coogee Live is part of the City’s Cockburn Live community event series for 2024-25. It has attracted thousands of locals and visitors alike to eight events to date, with a few standouts still left on the calendar, including the Mosaic Festival, the Easter Fair and the Show Off art exhibition. More than 60 business and professional women joined us at our International Women’s Day event yesterday, where we celebrated and reflected on the UN Women Australia's theme, March Forwards. It was wonderful hear the powerful stories from Robyn Whadjuk Ballardong Yorga Collard and see so many women in the room making powerful connections, sharing experiences, and enjoying themselves! ✨ Raine Medical Research Foundation Director Dr Amelia Scaffidi gave a powerful keynote address on the late WA philanthropist and property tycoon Mary Raine and her groundbreaking work. Dr Scaffidi also recognised the 30 years of progress for women (and the work still to do) since the United Nations Beijing Declaration. During the event City of Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett announced a new program for women in business called Hello Monday Level-Up, delivered by Future Female Leaders Program (FFLP) co-founder Karen Dennett, with ten places receiving 80 per cent sponsorship by the City to encourage local businesses to achieve success, growth and economic security. Karen, along with MCCC Melville Cockburn Chamber of Commerce board member and Catalyst Central founder Charlene Clarke, TeamLab Team Building co-founder Christine Kuca-Thompson, leadership coach Annette Stanton and CaAtherine Meredith, chair yoga teacher, shared their insights and advice, encouraging discussion and providing valuable take-aways for our attendees. It was a fantastic event and one we look forward to hosting every year. Popular Perth beauty spot Bibra Lake, in the 3,400ha Beeliar Regional Park, was the final stop on ABC Radio Perth's Breakfast by the Lake series 5 to 8am this morning. Listener memories of the lake area's former roles came thick and fast, including as a speedway, rubbish tip and rite of passage for canoe-lovers of all ages. And there were rich stories of market gardens, dairies, WWII army activities, horse riding schools and its eternal and ongoing significance to the Nyungar people of Beeliar Boodjar, with it remaining a popular Aboriginal camping ground well into the 1960s. Today its shores are home to the vital WA Wildlife hospital, The Wetlands Centre Cockburn, and Bibra Lake Regional Playground. Not far away are instantly recognisable Adventure World Perth and Cockburn Ice Arena. Thanks to Mark Gibson and the ABC Perth brekky radio team for your curiosity! It was great to host you at Coogee Beach for a live breakfast broadcast last year and to see you again today at Bibra Lake. You're always welcome in Cockburn. #Community #Grassroots #LocalHistory #CockburnTheBestPlaceToBe #CityOfCockburn #DestinationTourism #Radio #BreakfastRadio #LocalGovernment Caption: ABC Breakfast presenter Mark Gibson with City of Cockburn Environmental Education Officer Rafeena Boyle and Local History Officer Denise Cook (centre). Our friends at WA Wildlife in Bibra Lake are doing important work — with the help of many volunteers — treating sick and injured wildlife in their hospital. But record admissions are pushing them to capacity with fears they may need to send animals elsewhere. City of Cockburn economic development officer William Barry spoke to ABC News about our involvement with the centre spanning more than 20 years, and what the community could do to help. "It's a really attractive place for visitors," William said. "[The public] get to interact with the animals, they get to see how the rehabilitation is done." For the first time, WA Wildlife is offering educational koala tours, featuring three southern koalas — Jarrah and Euca (male) and Kaya (female). It's a chance to get up close to these iconic marsupials and support the centre to continue its wildlife conservation work at the same time. Funds raised from the tours help in the rescue, treatment and rehabilitation of more than 6,000 native animals each year. Read more: https://ow.ly/RR7C50V3g2e

Creating places for communities to gather, whether that’s to play sport or just make human connections, is something local government strives to achieve, especially for growing populations. A $26m+ staged redevelopment of the Success Regional Recreation Reserve has been endorsed by Cockburn Council, with priorities including overflow carparking and netball court floodlighting, subject to successful grant applications. The redevelopment proposes 8-10 infrastructure proposals, which includes rugby lights, valued at nearly $14m, while a $12m+ redeveloped community building is also on the list. Cockburn is growing rapidly - to meet the demands of an estimated 35 per cent increase in population by 2046 to more than 178,000 residents, this vital planning will help achieve future outcomes our community expects and deserves. Volunteering is one of those things that becomes a lifelong habit, so the earlier you start, the better for you and your community. Don't take it from us! 20-year-old Cockburn resident Atlas Pillinger has been at it for a few years now and has not only gained skills, confidence and friendship but has greatly benefitted others, particularly fellow youth and our Youth Advisory Collective based at Cockburn Youth Centre. By 2044 our fast-growing community will support nearly 180,000 residents, with young people aged up to 24 making up more than 28 per cent of the population. He was recently named the City of Cockburn Youth Community Citizen of the Year for 2025 and he is undeniably Quintessentially Cockburn! Atlas has recently been a peer researcher with the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA), gathering and analysing youth perspectives to inform policies that directly impact young people in Cockburn. Atlas is making a contribution today that will be felt tomorrow. Read his story: https://ow.ly/VHiN50UTQHe #Volunteer #Youth #CitizenAward #CommunityFirst #CityOfCockburn #ListeningAndLeading Evan H.
