Good News Story: Lana Horwell – Breaking Barriers in Plumbing At just 21, Lana Horwell is a third-year apprentice at Biloela Plumbing Works and is already achieving great things. She recently completed the MSMSS00019 Operate a Drain Cleaning System (Skill Set) training through the Master Plumbers' Association of Queensland Regional Road Trip, training funded by CSQ. The training taught Lana how to safely use high-pressure water systems, which she now uses daily at work. “This training has made a huge difference for me,” Lana said. “I now know how to use this equipment safely, and I feel way more confident taking on tasks at work.” Lana’s hard work doesn’t stop there. She recently competed in a plumbing competition and walked away with a silver medal. “I’m so proud of what I’ve done,” she said. “Even though I didn’t finish the task, I proved to myself that I can do what I’ve been taught. Coming second was amazing!” Lana is also passionate about inspiring more women to join the trades. “If you’re thinking about it, just go for it,” she said. “You’ll learn skills that will set you up for life. It’s not always easy, but if you keep giving it your best, you’ll get there.” Looking ahead, Lana wants to keep growing her skills with CSQ’s support. In five years, she sees herself as a fully qualified plumber and gas fitter, working hard and making the most of her trade. Lana’s story is a great example of how training programs like these can create safer, more skilled workplaces while encouraging more women to step into the construction industry.
