Douglas Partners was proud to support John Holland in delivering the Botany Rail Duplication, a critical infrastructure project to enhance freight rail capacity. This dual-track expansion, part of the larger Sydney Gateway project, is a key step toward reducing road congestion by moving freight from roads to rail. Our environmental consultants provided contamination assessment, remediation strategies, and ongoing management support. Douglas is proud to have provided geotechnical expertise to Multiplex and other key partners for the cofferdam at the New Sydney Fish Market. Our team played a critical role in the dewatering and monitoring of the cofferdam, ensuring the successful construction of the basement beneath Sydney Harbour. Over the course of 2 years, we closely monitored the movement of the cofferdam wall and water levels both in and out of the cofferdam and designed a working platform on the marine muds of the harbour floor. It’s incredible to see this structure now fully submerged and thriving with marine bio-habitat installations! Congratulations to all involved as the next phase begins. #SydneyFishMarket #GeotechnicalEngineeringAustralia #InfrastructureDevelopmentSydney Multiplex SMC Marine Sydney Fish Market
We’ve opened the flood gates… literally! Now that the structure of the new Sydney Fish Market is above ground and the basement is complete, we have rewatered the cofferdam, flooding the area and letting the sea life and seawater back in. The basement is now fully submerged in tidal conditions and functions as a hydrostatic structure. Under the surface, we have also installed 40 hanging fish habitat lattices and have secured 298 seawall tiles to the basement wall to promote the marine bio-habitat. Thanks to our consultant and subcontractor teams for helping us achieve this milestone! Works are now underway to remove the temporary structure of the cofferdam and construct the remaining wharf structures. The new Sydney Fish Market is proudly funded by the NSW Government. #builttooutperform

📢 New Guidelines from the NSW EPA 📢⬇
For some time now I’ve been providing updates on the NSW EPA's stance on the remediation of asbestos contaminated sites. The EPA has updated their website with a new section which has provided guidelines for the management of asbestos-contaminated sites. These guidelines focus on the assessment and remediation of sites contaminated with asbestos, ensuring safety and compliance with regulations. Key points include: * Identification and Assessment: Procedures for identifying asbestos contamination and assessing the extent of contamination on a site. * Remediation Options: Strategies such as on-site burial in a containment cell, capping with non-asbestos materials, removal of visible non-friable asbestos, and offsite disposal to licensed landfills. * Validation: Independent validation of remediation efforts to ensure management objectives are met and the site is suitable for its intended use. These guidelines are essential for professionals involved in environmental management and land development, providing clear steps to manage asbestos risks effectively. Importantly the draft position papers have been declared as no longer in effect. So at this point the typical process for remediation of asbestos contaminated sites can continue. The EPA has made it abundantly clear, however, that remediated soil, cannot be subsequently used off site or recycled, which is a sound decision. As always if you have any queries feel free to get in touch. https://lnkd.in/gfXZtJe9 Someone has pointed out that there was a problem with the link, (thanks Nick Cowman) the link above should work now but the NSW Gov icon, does not.

Over the weekend, students from the QUT Natural Resources Society explored the Keperra Quarry subdivision project, gaining insights into landslide mitigation and slope retention systems. Thank you to QUT (Queensland University of Technology) and Frasers Property Australia for making this hands-on learning experience possible. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/gNjahC59 #GeotechnicalEngineering #StudentExperience

Behind the success of major infrastructure projects like the Sydney Metro are countless hours of dedication, expertise, and teamwork. Luke, geotechnical engineer at Douglas Partners, reflects on his journey, from being present at the first borehole drilling at Blues Point in 2014 to overseeing investigations and installations that made this project possible. The Sydney Metro is a significant asset to the city, and we are proud to play a key role in its development. A big thank you to everyone involved in making this landmark achievement a reality. #SydneyMetro #GeotechnicalEngineering #Infrastructure #DouglasPartners
Finally got the chance to ride the new Sydney Metro with a colleague with who we started on this project back in 2014 drilling the first "SRT" borehole at Blues Point shaking Mike Baird's hand. I spent over 2600 hours on this job over many years starting as a field engineer drilling boreholes in the city and on barges in the harbour through to managing investigations and instrumentation installations during construction. Highlights included working inside the Barangaroo North shaft and the Blues Point shaft - including a 50m horizontal hole through a dyke. Very glad that it is finally up and running and is such an asset to Sydney!
