About us
DEM leads the global transformation economy, overseeing the responsible mining and production of the minerals, metals and fuels of the future, to safely and sustainably generate the energy and low carbon products of the future. Our low cost power, leading regulation system and culture of innovation is leading to the decarbonisation of industry, new modern manufacturing opportunities, increased employment and greater prosperity and security for the people of South Australia. We particularly acknowledge the essential role that traditional Aboriginal people play in the energy and mining sector as land managers, heritage custodians, business owners and community leaders. The Department for Energy and Mining (DEM) acknowledges Aboriginal people as the First Nations Peoples of South Australia. We recognise and respect the cultural connections as the Traditional Owners and occupants of the land and waters of South Australia, and that they continue to make a unique and irreplaceable contribution to the State.

When you drive north along the Stuart Highway in South Australia you may notice entry signs for the Woomera Prohibited Area (WPA). Managed under a coexistence framework, the WPA is a major Australian military and civil aerospace and testing facility, but also home to Aboriginal communities and pastoralists, a tourism destination and a key region for natural resources. A new resource prospectivity and economic assessment report, undertaken by Scyne Advisory with input from DEM, delves into new models and predictive maps for the mineral, energy, extractive and groundwater resource potential for the WPA. The updated resource prospectivity assessment of mineral, hydrogen and petroleum resources concludes that there is potential for further discovery of copper, gold, silver, iron, titanium, zirconium, uranium and nickel. These prospectivity ratings are relative and are based on the presence of favourable geological criteria for the respective deposit model and the presence of known deposits of the type already in the WPA. An economic assessment analysis suggests the region could make a positive contribution to gross state product (GSP) and jobs in the SA economy, and to Australia’s gross domestic product (GDP). 🗺️ Explore the evidence-based resource prospectivity analysis with our new StoryMap: https://ow.ly/C1FA50V51qM 📑 View the latest assessment report: https://ow.ly/EGXG50V51qK Learn more about South Australia’s Woomera Prohibited Area and the resource prospectivity analysis: 💻 https://ow.ly/QZY250V51qL #GSSA #SouthAustralia #Geology #Geoscience #GeologicalSurveySA #Copper #Gold #Silver #Iron #Titanium #Zirconium #Uranium #Nickel #Exploration #Mining #Scyne #ScyneAdvisory
