This project involved constructing a 25-level apartment building adjacent to the Belgrave/Lilydale train line, just 200m from Box Hill station. With five sub-surface levels requiring significant earthworks, anchoring, and piling, it was essential to monitor the nearby tracks for potential deformation due to the excavation. Geomotion Australia Victoria implemented a robust track monitoring system using Loadsensing Tiltmeters, strategically placed along the excavation to measure cant or twist in the sleepers. These tiltmeters provided near real-time data on track conditions. All collected data was managed and displayed through #Geomotion #Cloud, our web-based platform. We established a comprehensive settlement profile over a 60m track section and set up automated alarms and reporting for immediate alerts on any detected deformation. Despite the challenges of working in live rail corridors, our team delivered a quick and efficient installation. The Rail Infrastructure Alliance (RIA) oversaw the construction of the Eastern and Western Portals of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project. Due to the portals' proximity to existing rail assets and the necessary excavations, designers required inclinometers to monitor and provide data on expected ground movements. To meet the project's budgetary constraints and minimize long-term monitoring costs, Geomotion Australia Victoria supplied both In-Place Inclinometers (IPI) and a manual inclinometer probe. This approach allowed for real-time monitoring of more sensitive areas via a wireless system, while less sensitive areas were monitored manually on a less frequent schedule. The wireless system's implementation removed the need for vulnerable physical cables, adapting to the constantly changing construction site, reducing safety hazards, and minimizing personnel on site. Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project Client: CYP & Design Construction Geomotion Engagement: May 2018 to Current The Melbourne Metro Tunnel Project involves constructing twin 9km rail tunnels between Kensington and South Yarra, along with five new underground stations. This ambitious infrastructure project aims to enhance Melbourne's public transport network. Challenge Building the Metro Tunnel through Melbourne's CBD and densely populated areas requires a stringent and reliable instrumentation and monitoring system. The multi-site nature of the construction demands efficient equipment and resource planning to provide the project team with accurate data and a robust risk management system. Geomotion Australia Victoria designed and implemented a near real-time data management system for this project. This included the installation, baselining, and maintenance of geotechnical and structural instruments. The system also integrates data from InSAR, excavation stages, and third-party sources, forming a comprehensive monitoring program that addresses the needs of all stakeholders. As Australia's largest instrumentation project, thousands of instruments were installed across five precincts and two portals. Geomotion utilized Loadsensing technology, a long-range, low-power wireless solution used globally in IoT networks, to ensure connectivity. Instruments from various manufacturers, including Sisgeo, Soil Instruments, and Geosense, were connected to the monitoring system. Geomotion Australia Victoria efforts ensured timely data availability and compliance with safety and quality requirements, even in challenging conditions. The experience gained from this project led to the development of Geomotion Australia Cloud, a software suitable for large-scale monitoring projects involving geospatial, InSAR, and excavation data. Geomotion Australia Victoria also supported the training of Engineering Cadets and utilized the local supply chain.
