Hillside Aluminium’s partnership with Solana Energy ZA is helping to deliver solar energy to one of South Africa’s most important commercial hubs while providing training and employment opportunities to the local community. The multi-phased project involves the establishment of solar power infrastructure in the Richards Bay and King Cetshwayo District economic regions and a Solar Training Academy to upskill young electricians in the field of solar PV technology. In FY24, the partnership provided solar installation training to 120 unemployed young people and 10 small Black-owned electrical businesses through an accredited program. #hillsidealuminium #partnerships #solar #southafrica

Congratulations to Abigail, Aleixa, Helena, Karen, Noleen, Noriah and Thando – who put in an incredible effort to support a very worthy cause – raising money for the Imbumba Foundation Trust’s Caring4Girls Menstrual Hygiene program. 👏👏👏

We have just become a signatory to the Sea Cargo Charter – a global framework for assessing and disclosing the climate alignment of chartering activities.      Maritime freight is an integral part of our value chain, so as we work towards our goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, it’s crucial that we work to reduce the emissions associated with the shipping of our products and the supplies we use. Learn more about the announcement and the Sea Cargo Charter: https://lnkd.in/gs6nMiSA #mining #shipping #emissionsreduction

Science, engineering and technology are vital to our business and industry, and we're proud to support and celebrate emerging ideas and innovation in those fields.   In South Africa, we have a long-term partnership with the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF), including sponsoring the NSTF-South32 Awards for the past nine years, and supporting the NSTF's Brilliants program, which recognises and supports first-year science, medicine and engineering students.   The awards recognise the hard work and dedication driving innovation and development in science, engineering and technology in South Africa, across various industries, including mining.   Our team attended the 2023-24 awards ceremony last month - celebrating the incredible accomplishments of many individuals, teams and organisations across South Africa.   Congratulations to all the nominees and award winners! #awards #science #technology #recognition #southafrica

A key part of our purpose at South32 is to improve people’s lives now and for generations to come, and through our Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) we seek to deliver on this commitment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.   Since the launch of our first Reflect RAP in 2018, we’ve achieved a great deal to be proud of: increasing our social investment aimed at improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples; embedding reconciliation activities in our core business practices and decision-making; and nearly doubling procurement of goods and services from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander businesses.   Today we've launched our second Innovate RAP, building on the progress we've made toward Reconciliation in the places we operate in Australia and continuing to challenge ourselves by setting more ambitious targets and goals. This morning we've announced that all conditions to the sale of Illawarra Metallurgical Coal to an entity owned by Golden Energy and Resources Pte Ltd and M Resources Pty Ltd have now been satisfied. Accordingly, the sale is now unconditional and is expected to complete on or around 2 September 2024.   The sale of IMC is a significant milestone in the transformation of our portfolio towards commodities critical to a low-carbon future. The transaction will simplify our business, strengthen our balance sheet and reduce our capital intensity, unlocking capital to invest in our high-quality development projects in copper and zinc.

Exploration drilling is an integral part of our industry, but it can be challenging work - and manual, repetitive rod handling in exploration drilling carries the risk of injury to hands, shoulders, back, wrists and elbows. Recently, our exploration team identified an opportunity to trial a new innovation to improve this process - with an automated, hands-free rod handling system, the Evolution Drill Rig. The prototype was rolled out at the Jessica and Cararra exploration projects in Australia's Northern Territory for a twelve-month trial, which showed that the system successfully improved safety performance while maintaining productivity. Our teams are now looking to deploy the system on other exploration projects and across our operations.
