Our rural surveyors are incredibly lucky to explore, work with and protect historic Australian gems! One past treasure was Seven Emu Station in the Northern Territory. Owned by Frank Shadforth, who inherited the property from his father Willie Shadforth, Seven Emu Station is notable as one of the first pastoral leases purchased by an Aboriginal person in 1953. Seven Emu Station has partnered with a neighbouring property to create the first private nature reserve in the Gulf of Carpentaria, called the Pungalina-Seven Emu Wildlife Sanctuary. In a landmark partnership between a not for profit conservation organisation and an Indigenous landholder, Frank has subleased 110,000 hectares of Seven Emu to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC). This area, free from cattle, forms part of a 305,000-hectare sanctuary that stretches from sandstone uplands to the coastal waters of the Gulf. This sanctuary not only protects diverse habitats in one of Australia's highest-priority regions but also delivers significant socio-economic benefits for Indigenous communities. We are proud that our surveying work aids in the preservation and protection of these significant areas and heritage sites by identifying and mapping critical habitats and ecological features. Bathymetric surveys are undertaken to determine depths of water bodies and their underlying topographies.
