We were honoured to sponsor the 30th Anniversary of the Affirmative Action rules, a pioneering initiative that has profoundly influenced the landscape of women in politics. This milestone is a momentous occasion, reflecting the significant strides we’ve made together towards gender equality. We were thrilled to have MB's Jessica D. speak alongside Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan at the event. It’s a great privilege to support EMILY's List Australia, the leading financial, political, and personal support network for progressive women in Australian politics. By backing EMILY’s List, we enable them to take the lead in empowering women candidates, ensuring their voices are heard and their impact is felt in parliaments nationwide.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (1–31 October) is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer, promote early detection and support individuals affected by breast cancer. 🎀 More than 21,000 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. On average, that adds up to almost 60 people each day. MB's Naomi T Spigelman shares why it's so important we understand breast cancer and the importance of early detection. "Any diagnosis of breast cancer is devastating for a patient and their families. When a diagnosis is delayed, missed, or occurs because of an incomplete mastectomy, this can increase distress and result in a significant impact on mental health." This Occupational Therapy Week, we're spotlighting Helen Whait, the remarkable founder of ActivOT. Helen is a pioneer in the OT space, becoming the first in Australia to franchise a private practice. 👏 "I’m most proud of the impact we have on the lives of those we work with. As occupational therapists, we are problem solvers and don’t give up, even when things get tough," Helen says. Helen, who has had a remarkable 30-year career in occupational therapy, is a finalist for 'Occupational Therapist of the Year' at the 2024 Australian Allied Health Awards. This is a testament to her unwavering commitment to advancing the field of occupational therapy. Right now, there is a significant shortage of OTs, and demand is only growing as people begin to truly recognise their value. We're proud to partner with Occupational Therapy Australia and greatly appreciate the work that OTs like Helen do, especially for our mutual clients who turn to occupational therapists to help them get their lives back on track. "Maurice Blackburn is a key part of our team; together, we’re stronger and can achieve so much more for our clients," Helen says. #OTWeek #OccupationalTherapy #ActiveOT

    * * Historic win for illegally sacked Qantas workers * * The Federal Court has ruled that Qantas must pay compensation to workers who were illegally sacked during the COVID lockdowns. The sackings were carried out to stop those workers from collectively bargaining with their union, the Transport Workers' Union of Australia - TWU. That's illegal under Australian workplace law. The court has ruled on three cases. The parameters set will then be applied to all 1,700 sacked workers. The total compensation could add up to around $100 million dollars - not including a penalty, which will be pursued separately. Josh Bornstein, who represented the TWU in this battle and heads up MB's Employment and Industrial Law team, said: "This has been a David and Goliath battle. After four years, it has resulted in an amazing victory for the workers and their union, the Transport Workers' Union. We are immensely proud to have played a role, and we look forward to making sure that the 1,700 affected workers get every cent they're entitled to."
