Enhancing life and liveability

About us

In Melbourne, water is essential to our way of life. But the impacts of climate change bring hotter and drier weather, more severe bushfires and unpredictable storms and floods, less rainfall over time, and, of course, the possibility of another drought. By 2030 over six million Melburnians will need water every day. We are in the decade that matters when the actions we take now will define our future. That’s why at Melbourne Water, we are taking action to manage and protect the resources essential to our way of life. From providing clean drinking water, treating sewage so we can recover and re-use our valued resources, working within our community to reduce flood risk, and keeping all 25,000km of Melbourne’s rivers, creeks and catchments healthy, we care for, manage and protect all parts of the water cycle for today, tomorrow and for generations to come. Remem-baa Sugar the Sheep, who was rescued from Sugarloaf Reservoir back in October 2023? 🐑 A year later, Sugar is now due to be shorn again following his mammoth depilation last year, which removed nearly 12 kilograms of wool! He's been rehomed on a hobby farm in Mt Evelyn where he is thriving and successfully employed as a lawnmower in exchange for regular meals and grooming. ✂️ We caught up Georgia Duncan, one of our Water Supply Operators, who also led the rescue supported by Forever Friends Animal Rescue Forever Friends Animal Rescue and Vets For Compassion to find out what Sugar is up to now. In Melbourne, we're lucky to share our beautiful rivers and creeks with our native wildlife, including the iconic platypus. However, with climate change and more people wanting to call Melbourne home, their numbers are declining. It’s more important than ever, to understand where platypus are present. That's why a Melbourne Water-led program has sampled water at 1800 locations across our city's creeks and waterways. The sampling detects traces of platypus DNA shed into the environment from mucus, urine, faeces, skin and saliva 🧬. The program has uncovered that platypus are present in dozens of creeks and rivers throughout Greater Melbourne! Melbourne researcher Dr Rhys Colemen said “It may surprise many Melburnians to learn that there is platypus in their local creeks and rivers.” “Climate change and increasing urbanisation are impacting platypus habitats, and we must seize every opportunity to protect our precious waterways to stabilise their numbers,” he said. Together with data collected via ‘capture and release’ and sightings, we're able to get a comprehensive picture of platypus populations in Melbourne. In Melbourne, the Birrarung (Yarra River), is essential to our way of life. It's the lifeblood of Melbourne and part of what makes living here so great. That’s why Melbourne Water, alongside our partners: Parks Victoria, Wurundjeri Corporation, Yarra Riverkeeper Association, and local councils, are delivering the Yarra Capital Improvement Program - a dedicated renewal project to help enhance the health of our iconic waterway, the Birrarung, for generations to come. Spanning over 60km from Abbotsford to Warrandyte, we've planted over 60,000 native plants and grasses along the river to promote urban cooling and created habitats for waterbirds, fish, rakali and platypus. This program also delivers on key outcomes of the Burndap Birrarung Burndap Unmarkoo, the first bi-cultural plan to protect and enhance the Birrarung as one living, integrated natural entity from source to sea. At Melbourne Water, we care for all 25,000 km of Melbourne’s rivers and creeks and keep our catchments healthy. We also supply Greater Melbourne with clean drinking water and treat our city’s sewage. To continue protecting and enhancing our environment, we face several challenges: 👉 microplastics and chemicals entering our sewerage system 👉 contaminants from stormwater and litter entering our rivers and waterways 👉 managing increasing amounts of sewage at our sewerage treatment plants 👉 increasing carbon emissions from energy used at our water and sewerage treatment plants 👉 protecting natural ecosystems and biodiversity We’re looking at ways to address these challenges and make a real impact on the future of our essential services through our Price Submission 2026. 👉 Have your say: https://lnkd.in/gBVCxM2v

We are in the decade that matters, when the actions we take today will define our future.  The Victorian Government’s Housing Statement outlines an ambitious plan to build 800,000 new homes over the next decade.  We know that good water planning and strengthening our city’s flood resilience will be essential to support this growth. 🏡💧 That’s why at Melbourne Water, we’ve developed a Roadmap to ensure that our city’s water cycle is well planned for, and that system improvements are made to support sustainable housing growth. By speeding up approvals in low-risk areas, providing better risk information, and collaborating across the sector, we’re helping to fast-track housing while protecting our city, environment and way of life for generations to come. 👉 Learn more about how we’re unlocking tomorrow’s housing: https://lnkd.in/gGWkrday #HousingStatement #SustainableGrowth #WaterPlanning #MelbourneWater

We’re excited to announce that the shared-use bridge has just been installed at the Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek project. 👏 The bridge will provide connectivity for bicycle riders 🚲 and pedestrians 🚶 from the southern to northern side of Moonee Ponds Creek. The project is transforming 360-metres of the concrete-lined creek in Strathmore and Oak Park into a thriving natural waterway. This project will create a beautiful, cooler, and healthier open space for everyone to enjoy and connect with nature. Melbourne Water is leading the delivery of this project on behalf of the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group and in partnership with Merri-bek City Council, Moonee Valley City Council, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA), Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), and Wurundjeri Corporation. Keep up to date on the project including the planned open date 👉 https://lnkd.in/gfcCdV57
