Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant risk factor for poor mental health in young Australians, yet it's rarely discussed alongside the youth mental health crisis. Prevention United recently hosted a webinar featuring panellists Ally Kelly from Mind Blank Ltd, Rizina Y. from Young Women's Alliance and Prevention United Youth Advocates Em and Lauren, who came together to discuss the impact of GBV on mental health and shared strategies for reducing the incidence of both. We visually captured the discussion through our graphic recording, turning key insights into impactful visuals. Big thank you to Matilda Houlihan, Kylie Maidment and Suzanne Dick from Prevention United for hosting this event! #graphicrecording #graphicrecorder #livesketchnote #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness

Is it possible to be resilient and remain hopeful when you are surrounded by alcohol and drug abuse, crime, violence, bullying, an unstable family dynamic and the odds seem stacked against you? If you’ve watched (on @Netflix), read or heard about Boy Swallows Universe, it takes place a few kilometres from where I live. The story is semiautobiographical, but the major challenges the characters experience, such as addiction and incarceration, are real. For some, it’s hard to imagine the most outrageous plotlines aren’t fiction. But I get it. Over the past decade delivering Mind Blank mental health programs, I’ve encountered young people who come from similar backgrounds. Here’s the difference: The main character’s ability to remain hopeful that things will get better, despite having such a difficult life from a young age… For many, that is fictional. Trauma experienced in childhood has life-long repercussions, especially as it relates to mental health. Thank you @Trent Dalton for sharing your story and talent. And for anyone who hasn’t experienced Boy Swallows Universe yet and plans to do so, take a moment to reflect on the mental health aspect of the story. #mentalhealth #wellbeing #trauma #addiction #hope

Have you ever tried a digital detox? Recently, I’ve tried to cut back on the time I spend on social media. Honestly, it worries me that hours can go by without even realising it. I mean, have you ever checked your screen time? But it’s not just about the time, it’s about how it makes you feel. If endless scrolling leaves you with a sense sadness, frustration, dissatisfaction, or loneliness – it’s a clear sign to reassess your online habits. Here’s a few tips: 1. Set time limits: Use the built-in feature on your phone to set daily limits for social media usage. 2. Designate tech-free zones: Keep certain areas of your home free from digital distractions. 3. Mindful scrolling: Before opening an app, ask yourself if it adds value to your day, if not, skip it. #MentalHealth #Addiction #WorklifeBalance #Social #Wellbeing

At Mind Blank, we use a different approach to teaching mental health skills. Our delivery is via forum theatre and the creative arts. If you aren’t familiar, Forum Theatre is a theatrical technique focused on creating change. The moment I discovered it, a light bulb switched on. Mental health literacy and health promotion is often facts and figures based, but the interactive forum theatre model brings those lessons to life. Instead of just watching a story unfold, you get the chance to jump into the action. It provides a safe environment where we can go back through a storyline and see different choices characters can make. Your ideas, your decisions, transform the ending for our characters, showing the real impact of our choices. It’s interactive, it’s fun and it teaches crucial mental health skills in a way that sticks. #Fun #Humour #Theatre

They say smile is contagious, capable of changing the world. Imagine the power of adding just three words to that smile: R U OK? Simple yet powerful, these words can spark conversations that changes someone's life. Believe me, that one minute you take out from your busy life and ask, “R U Ok?” will be impactful. Growing up, I missed opportunities to connect, which delayed my ability to seek help. I've since learned the profound impact of using an authentic voice and sharing lived experiences. There’s immense strength in opening up. And today, I hope when someone asks, "R U OK?" you find the courage to share. At Mind Blank, we strive to create environments where people can seek help without hesitation. We offer programs that foster open conversations about anxiety, depression, and suicide, with a mission to educate and break the stigmas surrounding mental health. Want to know more about us and start your journey with mental health? Get in touch with us. #RUOKDay #EndTheStigma #MentalHealthMatters

Talking about mental health can be tough. One of the big questions we often get is whether our sessions might bring up some uncomfortable feelings. While we do tackle tough topics, we keep things light and easy. With wigs, costumes, and relatable language, we make even the trickiest subjects feel less confronting. At the start of each session, we lay out exactly what we'll be talking about. And if anyone needs to step out for a breather, no worries at all. Our main goal? Making sure everyone feels safe and supported, no matter what. #MentalHealthMatters #SuicidePrevention #Fun

Every day is suicide prevention day, and every month is suicide prevention month. But in September, the world unites to shine a light on it. This World Suicide Prevention Day, I’d like to reflect on the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing in the workplace—a topic close to my heart. Mind Blank has worked with many partners over the past 13 years. One of the most impactful sessions we held was in a male-dominated workplace that had experienced the tragic loss of a team member to suicide. This devastating event was a powerful and sobering reminder of just how essential it is to be vigilant in recognising early warning signs of distress. It also highlighted the importance of having the courage to step in and offer support when someone may be struggling. In this context, we facilitated a safe space where participants could practice having difficult but necessary conversations. This initiative proved to be incredibly impactful, helping to foster healing within the team, validating their experiences, and reinforcing a collective sense of responsibility to support one another, especially in times of crisis. Most suicides are preceded by warning signs. It’s important to stay aware, to notice, and to do our part in bringing hope back into someone’s life. Today I would like to remind us that together we can lift the veil on this topic. I know it’s heavy and sensitive, but it doesn’t have to be dreadful. #MentalHealth #EndTheStigma #MakeADifference #SuicidePrevention #WorkplaceWellbeing
