About us

Opera Australia is Australia’s national opera company, presenting more than 700 performances and playing to more than half a million people each year. Opera is a vital part of Australia’s cultural landscape. We perform the world’s best loved operas under the iconic sails of the Sydney Opera House and at Arts Centre Melbourne, as well as in school halls and outback towns, on Sydney Harbour and the Gold Coast beach. Our performances are broadcast in cinemas, on national television and ABC radio. We also present lavish musicals and concerts around the country. We bring exciting international talent to the Australian stage, and support the careers of hundreds of Australian singers, musicians and artisans.

  • Thank you, Sydney, for an incredible season! Today's sold-out matinee of Dido & Aeneas is the final performance of our summer season at the Sydney Opera House. With a line-up of operas that also included Cinderella, La Traviata, Candide and The Barber of Seville, this has been a hugely popular season with opera lovers and newcomers alike.   • The future of opera in Australia is in great hands! Yesterday we launched our new Young Artist Program with a concert at Sydney Opera House. Our six young artists (singers Chelsea Burns, Shikara Ringdahl, Elias Wilson and Leon Vitogiannis; répétiteur Jem Herbert and director Claudia Osborne) will undergo an intensive, fully paid 18-month journey of development, honing their craft under the guidance of some of the most esteemed names in the opera world.   • We’re delighted that our spectacular production of Sunset Boulevard will premiere in Beijing in late March, followed by strictly limited seasons in Shanghai, Wuhan and Shenzhen. Sunset Boulevard is currently playing to ecstatic audiences in Singapore, with international recording artist Sarah Brightman alongside Australian stars Tim Draxl, Ashleigh Rubenach and Robert Grubb, supported by an outstanding Australian company. We're proud to be showcasing these incredible Australian artists around the world.

  • ✨ Thank you Melbourne for a fabulous evening of music! ✨ The third annual BMW Opera for All was staged in Fed Square this Saturday. This free, open-air concert featured performances from four Opera Australia singers and 20 musicians from Orchestra Victoria, under the baton of Brian Castles-Onion. For the first time, the Australian Girls Choir joined for a special prelude performance. Thank you to everybody who attended and to BMW for making this incredible event possible!
