Members of our Sydney-based Cruise team recently made a team excursion to Port Kembla where they got to meet the team and see firsthand the State-wide significance of this port. Aspiring engineers and future marine enthusiasts from Lambton High School’s Marine Studies class showcased their talent by building replica tugboats and launching them in water for the first time. 🌊✨ This initiative supports the National STEM School Education Strategy 2016–2026, aiming to enhance science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Australian schools. The strategy emphasizes foundational skills like mathematical, scientific, and digital literacy while promoting problem-solving, critical analysis, and creative thinking. Port Authority was proud to participate in the inaugural Australian Commercial Marine Conference last week, where our Deputy Harbour Master for Sydney Harbour and Port Botany, Captain Nick Yatsenko provided an update on our critical role in the Harbour’s operations. The first-of-its-kind conference gathered representatives from more than 40 marine businesses, including tourism vessel operators, ferry operators and marine technology innovators. Capt. Yatsenko shared our role in managing large commercial vessel movements on the Harbour, including vessel traffic, safety regulations, incident frequency and weather sensors. #PortAuthority is delighted that the NSW Government announced yesterday the approval of MOD 3, our planning modification to the Eden Cruise Wharf. This paves the way for more frequent and larger cruise ship visits to Eden over the next decade and beyond. With greater capacity for cruise ship visits now a reality, we are hopeful to see more bookings, possibly as soon as the upcoming season, for some of the larger cruise ships already operating in the Australian market that have until now been unable to berth in Eden MOD 3 will significantly boost the local Eden community, with more passengers visiting Eden and injecting additional visitor spend into the local economy. It comes off the back of Eden’s busiest summer cruise season on record, expected to pump an estimated $19 million into the local economy. As we prepare for the summer cruise season, we’re excited to share that 26 cruise ship visits are already planned. One person who’s experienced more variety than most is Karlene Jones, who’s steered her career for 27 remarkable years at Port Authority. “I first joined as an Administration Officer with the Engineering team, and did that for 11 years, then became Front Desk Receptionist in 2007. After COVID-19, I realised I needed a change. I’ve always loved the events side of what we do, so I became more involved in that area. Last year, I became Events Coordinator, and recently I’ve been Acting as the Venue Manager for some of our world-class locations, which is another learning curve!” “I just love being here. I love the people I work with; they’re friendly and supportive.” We are so proud of all Karlene has achieved, and we can’t wait to see how her journey with us continues.
