At the Queensland Department of Education, we understand that education extends beyond the classroom. The standard curriculum isn’t for everyone which is why we cater for all pathways. Full-time lifeguard Tiarna McGee struggled at school, finding most subjects to be boring, which led to low attendance. She briefly dropped out of school; unclear of the path she wanted to take. Tiarna’s mum, eager to help her daughter discover her passion, learnt about Cooee GC – a Queensland Department of Education campus, run as part of Elanora State High School, that uses surfing as a vehicle towards student pathways and success in Years 11 and 12. Tiarna didn't know how to surf, but it didn't stop her - she waxed a surfboard and headed to the beach, determined to find her feet. 'It was the hardest thing I've ever tried. But I tried so hard 'cause I'm like, oh, I want to be in this school,' she says. When Tiarna got accepted into Cooee GC, her path started to become clearer and clearer. The Cooee GC school week is catered to each student's unique pathway. On different days, students attend their chosen apprenticeships, traineeships, certificate courses or work that contributes to their QCE. All Cooee GC students are required to obtain a Cert II in Public Safety and Aquatics (Surf Bronze Assessment). After completing the Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion training, Tiarna continued to work towards Silver and Gold Medallions—setting the foundations towards her job as a lifeguard. For Tiarna, going to Cooee GC challenged her ideas of what she was capable of. 'A goal was to graduate, so that was pretty big,' she says. 'I didn't pass many subjects before going to Cooee. I then got high distinctions…in my subjects—I didn't think I could do that.' Now 2 years out of school, Tiarna plans to study nursing. 'I like that aspect of lifeguarding, like the first aid stuff. So, I thought I'd try it and give it a go,' she says. As for surfing, Tiarna still loves to surf and aims to get out there every day. Today is National Close the Gap Day, a time to reflect on our progress and reaffirm our commitment to improving educational, health, and employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The National Agreement on Closing the Gap, developed in partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, sets out key targets and four Priority Reforms to drive meaningful change. In Queensland, we are working to close the gap in education by: • supporting early years learning • fostering culturally safe classrooms • strengthening partnerships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities • creating pathway opportunities for our senior students, ensuring access to further education, training, and employment. Closing the gap is everyone’s business – we all play a part. Together, we can close the gap. Recovery takes time, patience, teamwork, and a strong sense of community. Many of our school communities were impacted by Ex-Cyclone Alfred, and it’s incredible to see the resilience and dedication in action. A huge thank you to Kalindi Brennan and everyone who helped get Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre back on track! 👏
Cyclone Recovery – We Did It! 🌪️ Our Cyclone Alfred recovery works at Numinbah Valley Environmental Education Centre were a big success! Despite the Hinze Dam levels rising to 126%, which impacted access to our centre, along with strong winds and some tree damage, we’re happy to report that our site held up really well. 💪🏽 A huge thank you to the Queensland Department of Education, Building for Queensland (Qbuild), Seqwater, our amazing staff, and all the contractors who worked tirelessly to get us back on track. 🙌🏽 A special mention to our Regional Director, John Norfolk, and the South East Region team for their outstanding communication and support before, during, and after the weather event. Their collaborative efforts made all the difference in keeping our schools informed and connected. 🙏🏽 With everyone’s valued contributions, we’ve cleaned up & we’re ready to dive into a full schedule of programs to wrap up the term! And of course, the plants loved the rain – our site is lush and abundant, with wildlife flourishing all around us. 🌱 A massive thank you again to everyone involved in the clean-up efforts. Your loyalty, professionalism, and hard work means the world to us. 💚 Glenn Tozer Keep Queensland Beautiful P&Cs Qld
