Physics can be seen as a tough and abstract subject, but Bray Park State High School STEM teacher Jen Mccahon is changing that perception – one star-gazing night at a time. ‘We had kids who’d never looked through a telescope, looking at stars and seeing the rings of Saturn,’ Jen shared. ‘Watching students and their families connect with the universe, seeing their excitement – it’s what makes this all worthwhile.’ Through her innovative teaching and astronomy nights, Jen is igniting a love of space and science in her students. For Jen, physics isn’t just about formulas and theories; it’s about the thrill of discovery. ‘I want them to feel that thrill of discovery. Not just to learn science but to experience it.’ Her students take on exciting challenges, such as building space insulation or designing human colonies for Mars, making science both fun and practical. ‘I give them challenges that push their thinking and encourage them to be curious. It’s not about giving them the answers, but about letting them explore and find solutions themselves. I love seeing that spark in their eyes when they figure something out independently.’ Under Jen’s mentorship, Bray Park SHS students have excelled in STEM, earning accolades like the City of Moreton Bay Telstra Innovation Awards for their creative solutions to real-world problems. ‘I’m so proud of what they’ve achieved. They’ve worked incredibly hard, and to see their passion match mine is the best reward I could ask for,’ Jen shared. #STEMEducation #InspiringTeachers #TeachQLD #InnovativeLearning

When relocating from Warwick to Charleville, teacher Sam Owczarek was amazed by the support provided by the department: ‘The department was extremely helpful in relocating my family and covering the cost of transporting all our belongings to our new location. I was provided with housing, a three-bedroom house, with discounted rental assistance and no water charges. This allowed us to save up over the years to buy our own home in Charleville 2 years ago,’ shares Sam. Known as Mrs O, Sam has embraced the rewards of living and teaching in rural and remote Queensland. Her career has taken her to some of Australia's most unique locations, from the Gulf of Carpentaria to outback Queensland, offering opportunities for career progression and personal growth. ‘I love seeing my students succeed and knowing I played a part in their development.’ Sam’s dedication has led to significant achievements, including becoming a Highly Accomplished Teacher and receiving multiple accolades, such as the Peter Doherty Outstanding Teacher of STEM award. Beyond professional milestones, Sam treasures the close-knit community in Charleville: ‘It’s rewarding to be part of a close-knit community where I can make a meaningful impact.’ If Sam’s journey resonates with you, explore the full range of rural and remote benefits and incentives available for teachers relocating to these Queensland communities: https://lnkd.in/gXN5JVz #GreatStoriesStartHere #TeacherStories
