Did you know that the Rainbow Shoelace Project was started when I was just 12 years old. I was living in the remote town of Broken Hill (12 hours from Sydney). Max Burrows and I would hang free packs of beads on noticeboards outside of the local shopping centre. We really got our start by content creators sharing our project (shout out to Queer Chameleon, Christian Hull, Nat Alise and Christian Wilkins who were our very first supporters). The Australian Government are trying to ban social media from young people under the age of 16. The people who need our project the most, are young queer people, many of who are being bullied at school, or who are feeling isolated at school, and who are under 16. How will they see our project if they don’t have access to social media? Trust me - I’ve tried traditional media to help spread the message of the Rainbow Shoelace Project but most mainstream outlets aren’t interested in our (amazing, wonderful and life changing) project.
