“#Veterans and their families fought hard for The Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. They’d had enough and knew something needed to change. As a #psychiatrist who works with veterans, I shared their frustration and anguish”. RANZCP spokesperson on veteran mental health care, Dr. Alexander YC Lim has emphasised the need for a new independent body to oversee the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. “We must expand access to mental health care, but we also need to ensure services are trained in how to provide culturally safe care to this unique group”. What an exciting announcement! Happy to share that Dr. Chloe Campbell from University College London will be this year's guest speaker for Spectrum and RANZCP Victorian Branch's Annual Jo Beatson Lecture on 7 November. Chloe as an international authority on epistemic trust, will delve into this critical topic, crucial in understanding developmental psychopathology and vulnerability to mental disorder. Emerging evidence suggests that fostering epistemic trust may enhance psychotherapy effectiveness for individuals struggling with epistemic mistrust or elevated levels of epistemic credulity. Join us for an enlightening online session as we explore the implications of epistemic trust in clinical practice. There will be ample time for audience questions and discussion following the lecture. This week from Monday 16 September to Sunday 22 September is Dementia Action Week 2024 and this year’s theme is “Act Now for a Dementia-Friendly Future.” We’re encouraging everyone to learn more about #dementia and how you can help shape our communities. Tune into the #PsychMatters episode with old age psychiatrists, A/Prof Samantha Loi and A/Prof Steve Macfarlane, who discuss ‘Young onset dementias’, including frontal lobe dementias. They discuss the challenges in diagnosing dementia in younger people, investigations including neuroimaging and cognitive testing and potential red flags that might lead the general #psychiatrist to consider a #dementiadiagnosis when reviewing middle-aged adults with psychiatric symptoms and conditions.
