Today is #WorldSuicidePreventionDay, with the theme of changing the narrative on suicide. Globally, more than 700,000 people die by suicide each year, making it a major public health challenge. As #psychiatrists, we are dedicated to delivering comprehensive mental health care and working to prevent #suicide. Yesterday marked the release of the Final Report from the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide, highlighting the need for improved cultural practices and better access to mental health resources within the Defence community. The College made a formal submission to the Commission, emphasising the need for improved access to #psychiatriccare for serving members and veterans. We welcome the release of the report and call for an urgent and timely government response. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gUPDVk5V

The RANZCP emphatically supports the calls made for an independent body to oversee the implementation of the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. RANZCP President, Dr Elizabeth Moore said the current system that looks after our military’s mental health and wellbeing is fundamentally broken. We urge the Commonwealth Government to make a serious commitment to expand #mentalhealthservices as well as improve military cultural competency in health professionals working with #veterans, as recommended by the Commission. “This report marks a critical step toward addressing the systemic failures that have left many of our veterans without support for decades” said President, Dr Elizabeth Moore.
