SDA Structures is a specialist Structural Engineering consultancy practice.
About us
Since inception, the firm has been involved with high profile projects throughout Australia. A significant proportion of the practice’s workload is derived from buildings with complex forms and high architectural content, requiring close collaboration between the members of the design team. Projects we are involved with vary in size from quite small to $100m+. The firm prides itself in its involvement with many of the major architectural projects completed in NSW in recent years and our work has been recognised for Excellence in Structural Engineering by Engineers Australia and the Association of Consulting Structural Engineers ACSE NSW. The projects we collaborate on have received awards for architecture, heritage, urban renewal, adaptive re-use, sustainability, timber structures, concrete, steel and masonry. All major projects that the firm has been involved with recently have been designed using ESD principles. As a medium-sized firm, SDA are able to provide our clients with a highly personal service often forgotten in larger practices, while maintaining the resources and knowledge base often lacking in smaller practices. We offer the direct involvement of a director in all stages of a project. We appreciate that every project is different and design all our structures to reflect the specific constraints of an individual site and do not attempt to force the site to accept structural solutions imported from other projects. COMPLEX – SUSTAINABILITY 8 years of design development together with the FABPREFAB team and sustainability is still the core focus. A complex, ever evolving approach of continuous design refinement to eliminate concrete entirely, utilise mass timber / CLT for carbon sequestration, reduce waste / materials and bring it all together in a repeatable and prefabricated system. We have run the carbon numbers and on sustainability the @fabprefab systems are in a class of their own, especially with their off grid ready building systems. All credit to @fabprefab and @_edcal #architecture #australianarchitecture #masstimber #clt #prefabricated

A very interesting thing indeed. Will get researching more details on this.
'Gardner's research specialism is structural steel and he agrees that there is a high level of interest worldwide in printed steel technology.' Read Leroy Gardner's career profile in #TheStructuralEngineer: https://lnkd.in/eqrigS9t

SIMPLE – SUSTAINABILITY ‘The most sustainable building is the one that already exists…’ What a nice and simple line from @granddesignsau @theimpossiblehouse Adaptive re use and heritage upgrades are very good friends with sustainability. At Juanita Nielsen Community Centre in Woolloomooloo, the heritage masonry walls and timber floors were retained with the replaced timber trussed roof being the main intervention. Learning by doing 🪚🪵 🛖 Our interns are learning by doing. Since July last year our local and international interns have been working together to build a two storey house to learn timber framing design and construction. The timber house complies with AS1684, the Residential Timber Framed Construction Australian Standard that covers the design, construction, and installation of timber-framed buildings, so it’s a great way to learn about residential timber design in Australia. Well done Simran Sidhu for starting the project, Grace Albon for working on it from start to finish, Pauline Grall for getting up to first floor and Marvel Liandri for adding the roof. #teamwork #timberdesign

BIG – SUSTAINABILITY St Patrick’s College: Scientia Building is one of our larger educational projects. While mass timber was pursued and developed for the structural solution to an advanced stage, it was decided to go with reinforced concrete for reasons including the large cantilever areas, transfer structures, three storey voids and the exoskeletal primary frame which is externally exposed to the elements for much of the building. Sustainability is much more difficult to pursue vigorously here but the inherent high strength of post tensioned concrete allows for large spans and optimised slab thickness to minimise materials and eliminate foundations completely in many areas. Maintenance is minimised with the concrete frame. Extensive façade shade and cross ventilation help reduce operational carbon. #architecture #australianarchitecture #educationalarchitecture #concretestructure

SMALL - SUSTAINABILITY Standard timber framed construction is one of the most sustainable forms of structure. Lightweight = reduced foundations Prefabricated wallpanels / floor cassettes = Minimised Waste/time/cost Trussed Rafters = long clear span roof Fast growing softwood pine = optimum carbon sequestration #architecture #australianarchitecture #timberstructure
