World-leading enviro tech company creating solutions to address climate change and food security | SeaFeed™

About us

Sea Forest Limited is a science-based environmental technology company harnessing the power of Australian seaweed Asparagopsis, and replicating its bioactives, to drive sustainable long-term solutions to the challenges of climate change and global food security. The Sea Forest team is dedicated to fighting climate change by being the first in the world to cultivate Asparagopsis at a commercial scale and producing SeaFeed™ livestock supplement. Our scientists have now replicated the bioactives found naturally in this seaweed. Composed of industry’s best scientists, the Sea Forest team is producing the highest methane abating supplement in the world by using the most effective production facilities and methodologies. Sea Forest is now producing more SeaFeed™ than ever, and as our farming, manufacturing and production operations continue to grow, so too will our positive impact on the planet. Sea Forest’s SeaFeed™ supplement is in commercial use with primary producers. The company is also collaborating with major consumer brands to bring products to market and educate consumers. The company’s solution is backed by more than 30 peer reviewed studies and is supported by a network of research partnerships with leading universities. Sea Forest is a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact on sustainability. Through the nonprofit Sea Forest Foundation, we work with the Institute of Marine and Antarctic Studies at the University of Tasmania to restore Tasmania’s endangered native giant kelp forests.

Musings is one of those rare corners of the internet that makes you feel good about the future. Founded by Susan Rockefeller they believe entrepreneurs and consumers hold the power to shift demand and create the change we need to ensure a safe and healthy planet for everyone. Worth a follow if you like getting your inspiration from people doing what they believe in, often when it's never been done before.

Sam Elsom grew up camping and surfing in Australia where he quickly developed a love for the ocean and wildlife. In 2004, he launched one of Australia’s first sustainable apparel houses, which later led him to consulting for companies like Kering and Quiksilver on improving the social and environmental impacts of their supply chains. After reading a 2017 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Sam was inspired to find a way to create larger impact. During this time, he came across research conducted by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) on feeding a variety of seaweeds to livestock to measure the impact on methane production. One seaweed, Asparagopsis, significantly outperformed the rest with a very small amount resulting in the elimination of almost all emissions. Shortly after this discovery, in 2018, Sam founded Sea Forest, a company that has taken those early findings and brought it to market at scale. Their product, SeaFeed™, is a seaweed-infused feed supplement for all ruminant (animals with four stomachs) livestock. They use both marine and land-based aquaculture to farm the Asparagopsis, and “have the capacity to reduce approximately 10 million tons of CO2e per year from livestock production,” says Sam. While headquarters is located in Tasmania, and Australian farmers have been using SeaFeed since 2020, the company has since expanded to Europe with plans to eventually supply every continent.

Congratulations to the honourable Julie Collins on becoming the new minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (as well as Small Business). As fellow Tasmanians, we look forward to showing you around our marine farm sometime and introducing the projects we're working on to help secure the future of agriculture in Australia. Exciting stuff like... 🌊 Being first in the world to cultivate native Asparagopsis seaweed at a commercial scale (to reduce methane emissions from livestock). 🐮 Creating the world's first methane-busting lick block for grazing livestock. 🥛 Helping launch the world's first low emission milk with pioneering Tasmanian dairy, Ashgrove. Drop in anytime and all the best with the job.

Farmers encounter numerous challenges and risks, with many moving parts at play. In this high-stakes field, things can go south rapidly, so I have immense respect for their resilience. In this episode of The Mentor, we explore the rich history and modern innovations of Ashgrove Cheese, one of Tasmania’s renowned farms. Richard Bennett our guest, shares the captivating story of his family’s journey to Tasmania over a century ago and how this legacy ignited his passion for farming and cheese-making. He also introduces Ashgrove’s latest innovation, seaweed milk developed in collaboration with Sea Forest, where eco-cows produce milk with a significantly reduced carbon footprint. We're positively chuffed to announce our exclusive partnership with Morrisons, the 125-year-old chain of supermarkets in the UK, helping them fast track lower carbon beef products in their stores.   Working with Morrisons manufacturing arm, we'll be supplying SeaFeed™, our methane-busting livestock feed, to help speed up the introduction of lower carbon products like mince, burgers and steaks in Morrisons 500 supermarkets and 1,600 convenience stores.   “As British farming's biggest direct customer, we're well placed to support the farmers we work with and help them farm more sustainably," said Sophie Throup, FRASE Technical and Sustainability Director for Morrisons manufacturing arm. "This partnership supports our ambition to have net zero agriculture emissions by 2030."   The latest step in an innovative research programme by Morrisons and Queen's University Belfast, Professor Sharon Huws, Director of Research, Queen's University Belfast, School of Biological Sciences and Institute for Global Food Security (IGF) said: “We are delighted to be working closely with Morrisons and Sea Forest to provide the scientific evidence underpinning the journey towards net zero in the Morrisons beef chain. Innovation is at the centre of the IGFS ethos, and this collaboration is an important example of how our research translates into impact for the sector, and indeed for the health of our planet."
Getting to work with one of the most respected retailers and food producers in the UK is another proper milestone for Sea Forest.   After trials with beef, dairy and wool producers across Australia and New Zealand, we're absolutely cock-a-hoop (our new fave English term) to partner with Morrisons and start making a meaningful impact on an international scale.
