As a global mining and metals company, we have an important role to play in addressing climate change. Our approach aims to protect and unlock long-term value, enhance our competitiveness in a low-carbon future and build operational resilience. Decarbonising our operations remains a key focus, particularly those which account for the majority of our operational greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.   Our operational GHG emissions decreased by 6% in financial year 2024 compared to the previous year. During the year, we converted two of Worsley Alumina’s coal fired boilers to natural gas, contributing to a 14% reduction in the refinery’s FY24 operational GHG emissions against FY21 levels. We also continue to work with key stakeholders towards securing stable and affordable low-carbon energy solutions for our aluminium smelters in Southern Africa.  Our teams are continuing to investigate and trial new technologies which have the potential to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. During 2024, we also achieved key milestones in the transformation of our portfolio to focus on the commodities critical to a low-carbon future, including final investment approval for Hermosa’s zinc-lead-silver Taylor deposit, and the sale of Illawarra Metallurgical Coal.

It has just been announced that our Worsley Alumina operation has successfully obtained full ASI Performance Standard v3.1 Certification – here’s why that’s a big deal 🔽 Around the world, manufacturers such as the automotive sector want to know that the aluminium they source is produced responsibly. The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) is a global standard setting and certification organisation for the responsible production, sourcing and stewardship of aluminium. Certification from ASI helps build customers’ confidence that their supply chains can be verified to meet sustainability principles and standards. To obtain Performance Standard v3.1 certification, the team at Worsley Alumina compiled and presented the information and evidence required to meet the ASI’s 11 principles and 62 environmental, social and governance related criteria. In obtaining certification, Worsley has become one of only a few alumina refineries around the world to be certified to this level. With Mozal Aluminium also having full ASI certification, we can now deliver aluminium with a fully certified value chain covering the mining of bauxite and the refining of alumina at Worsley, and the production of aluminium at Mozal. Well done to the team at Worsley Alumina and everyone involved in helping achieve this significant milestone.  #aluminium #sustainability #mining

Our South32 Hermosa project in Arizona has been selected to enter award negotiations for up to $166m from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) – which will support the potential development of a commercial-scale manganese production facility. Hermosa’s Clark deposit is currently the only advanced project in the United States with a clear pathway to produce battery-grade manganese from locally sourced ore for the North American electric vehicle battery market. While subject to further study, construction of the facility and the development of Clark represents a significant opportunity to establish a North American supply chain of battery-grade manganese in a phased approach in line with market development. Construction of a decline at Clark to enable bulk sampling through a demonstration plant and further underground exploration is underway, with decline access scheduled for the end of CY25. The grant from the DOE’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing program would provide 30 per cent of the cost of the manganese production facility on a cost-share basis and subject to final negotiation, up to the grant award of US$166M. The potential development of the Clark deposit is in addition to the development of Hermosa’s Taylor zinc-lead-silver deposit, which is progressing as planned following final investment approval earlier this year. Our investment in Taylor will unlock value for future growth options, including Clark, by establishing significant shared infrastructure. #mining #manganese #batteries

Next week will mark six months since Tropical Cyclone Megan severely impacted Groote Eylandt, off the coast of Australia's Northern Territory - with record rainfall and the strongest wind gusts in 20 years. The intense weather system resulted in flooded mining pits and caused significant damage to a critical bridge, the wharf, and port infrastructure. As a result, we temporarily suspended operations at GEMCO. It was quickly evident how much work would be needed to get GEMCO back up and running – and in the months since, our teams have been working towards that goal – particularly the dewatering of mining pits, where a huge volume of water has now been removed. In addition to managing the impact on our operations, our teams on the ground have played a key role in supporting communities on the island with their recovery efforts to get back on their feet. On Groote Eylandt, GEMCO performs a unique role by providing a range of infrastructure and services which the community relies on, including fuel and electricity supply.  In the wake of the storm’s impact, the team at GEMCO took on many tasks to support the recovery and restore key services, such as removing fallen trees and implementing solutions for damaged infrastructure. With fuel supply to the island cut off after Cyclone Megan, the GEMCO team rationed the operation’s fuel reserves, with the team coordinating fuel access and ‘manning the pumps’ for approximately 14 weeks to support key services providers such as emergency services, health, education, Aboriginal corporations, as well as the public, until fuel deliveries to the Eylandt resumed in late June. The safety and wellbeing of our people and surrounding communities is always our priority. Fortunately, there were no reports of significant injuries as a result of the storm, and in the months since Cyclone Megan, safety has remained the team's focus.   In recent months, a phased return to mining activity has commenced – and is expected to increase to support a planned build in stockpiles ahead of the wet season. Wharf operations are scheduled to recommence in Q3 FY25, subject to maintaining construction productivity during the wet season. Well done to the whole team at GEMCO on your efforts and commitment to safety across the past six months. #mining #safety #GEMCO #northernterritory

When the team at our MOZAL, S.A. aluminium smelter in Mozambique became aware of children at a local school being forced to hold classes outside due to a lack of facilities, they took action - delivering new and rehabilitated facilities to support the education needs of more than 4,000 local students. Last week, this incredible initiative by the Mozal team was recognised at the Australia-Africa Minerals & Energy Group (AAMEG) awards with the Established ESG Leader Award for a Resource Producing Company. The new Escola Básica de Malhampsene school includes 21 classrooms, which have reduced overcrowding in the school, eliminating the need for classes to be held outside, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for our communities. This project is just one of many initiatives by the Mozal team to support their local communities through improving access to education, healthcare and economic opportunities. #community #education #awards #mozambique

To the northwest of our Cannington operation in Queensland, is the South32-owned Cowie Station. Covering more than 94,000 hectares of land, Cowie Station has high cultural heritage and biodiversity value in addition to supporting pastoral activities over its grazing lands.   The Traditional Owners of Cowie Station are the Yulluna peoples, Mitakoodi peoples and Kalkadoon peoples, and we respect the deep knowledge and connection the Traditional Owners have with the land.   We engage with the Traditional Owners to inform our management and conservation activities on Cowie Station and we have also identified opportunities to promote improved biodiversity and conservation outcomes, alongside the protection of cultural values.
