“Up until then, there had never been a project on that scale before,” says Senior Principal and Project Director Sam Gunasekera, reflecting on his experience working on the transformation of Homebush Bay leading up to the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympics. Addressing the site’s industrial past and paving the way for its development into a world-class complex, scientists like Sam played a crucial role in tackling the environmental challenges of Homebush Bay, now Sydney Olympic Park. Their efforts culminated in one of Australia’s largest soil, ground gas, and groundwater contamination studies in the 1990s.
