Congratulations to Leigh Davey, our 2024 David Norman Young Engineer of the Year. Launched in 1998, the award was created to honour David Norman’s legacy as #NDY’s founder and to inspire the next generation of engineers to reach new heights. It’s about recognising hard work, celebrating achievements and encouraging a commitment to innovation in the field. Leigh’s path to structural engineering started with a city experience trip in year 10, where his fascination with high-rises first sparked. “I couldn’t stop looking up,” he recalls. “I was dying to know how they were built—how they could stay up in a storm or an earthquake.” That curiosity has fueled a career dedicated to solving complex problems and shaping the built environment. Outside of work, Leigh channels his creativity through music. Mater Hospital Springfield Stage 2, an extension of the Mater Private Hospital Springfield, will provide essential healthcare to one of Queensland’s fastest-growing regions. This 9-level facility will deliver 234 beds, including 174 for public patients, along with an emergency department, an ICU and operating theatres. It meets demand today while making room for the future. Smart, sustainable design underpins it all. A central energy facility and high-voltage network replace smaller plants, making operations more efficient and cost-effective. Less equipment, lower maintenance and a setup that supports long-term growth. Having delivered the stage one design for the private hospital, we worked closely with Mater’s team to integrate new services into the hospital’s existing infrastructure. We’re thrilled to see that construction is officially underway on the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) in Perth! Covering 35,000 m², the AARC offers something for everyone - indoor and outdoor pools, fitness areas, sports courts and a café. Once complete, reaching the AARC will be easy, with METRONET’s Alkimos train and bus stations just around the corner. The Centre will be 100% electrified. Heat pumps will manage heating and cooling, powered by onsite renewables. Water-saving technology will help reduce waste, while low-carbon materials are being incorporated to minimise environmental impact - building a space that cares for both people and the planet. The Adelaide Botanic High School expansion adds a striking 7-storey vertical extension, blending with the original campus and delivering a space designed for the thinkers and dreamers of tomorrow. From rooftop sports courts to food tech labs, entrepreneurial hubs and performing arts facilities, this campus extension is packed with opportunities for students to explore, create and connect. Behind the scenes, clever thinking shaped the way this space functions. With no room for a bulky transformer, our electrical design upgraded the existing power supply, threading cable pathways through the basement to deliver the extra capacity the school needed – all while keeping every inch of space usable and functional.
