Yes... It's still a thing.
About us
Leprosy Mission Australia is committed to the empowerment of individuals, families, and communities affected by leprosy or at risk of the disease. Such people often suffer from lack of choice and are usually powerless to change their situation. Leprosy Mission Australia wants to help them enlarge their choices, and to encourage and enable them to take part in decisions affecting their lives. Leprosy Mission Australia's goal is empowerment, not dependency. Empowerment enables each person affected by leprosy to reach their potential as a full participant in their community, which gives them pride, dignity, and a sense of worth. In the end, we want to hear people say, “I've been cured of leprosy AND I am a valued and respected person.” Leprosy Mission Australia works in partnership with individuals and communities affected by leprosy in 29 countries worldwide, in order to restore and enhance human dignity, self-reliance, and quality of life. Leprosy Mission Australia does all of its work in and under the name of Jesus Christ. Over 2000 national and international staff work together to provide appropriate medical, educational, and other services to meet the many needs of people affected by leprosy. Leprosy Mission Australia concentrates its focus of work within India, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, Nepal, and Indonesia.

A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME! The brief but brilliant career of US chemist Alice Ball, who brought hope and new life to thousands of leprosy patients in the 20s and 30s, was almost lost to history, but a recent film highlights her life-changing work. The short film The Ball Method dramatizes the story of an unsung hero who pioneered the first effective treatment for leprosy but died before she could publish her findings. A senior colleague then claimed her work as his own, and Alice wasn’t recognized for her discovery for half a century. An unprecedented leprosy vaccine will be tested in Brazil by the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (IOC/Fiocruz). Called LepVax, the vaccine will be the first for the disease assessed in the country during clinical trials. 💉 If the results of the studies are positive, the leprosy vaccine could become part of the national immunization schedule in the future. Brazil is the country with the second highest number of cases of the disease in the world, behind only India. In ten years, from 2014 to 2023, there were almost 245,000 new infections, according to the Ministry of Health. In 2023 alone, there were 22,773 new cases. Led by American Leprosy Missions (ALM), LepVax has been developed in collaboration with almost 30 institutions from different countries since 2002. In addition to IOC/Fiocruz, Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz and Fiotec, cooperating with the project are: Access to Advanced Health Institute (AAHI), Aeras, Anesvad, Covance, Damien Foundation, DFnet, Effect Hope, FAIRMED, German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Relief Association (DAHW), Global Health Innovative Technology Fund (GHIT), H.L. Snyder Medical Foundation, ILEP Federation, Leonard Wood Memorial, @Leprosy Relief - Canada, Leprosy Research Initiative, National Hansen's Disease Program, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIH), P.S. and Ouida Bailey Foundation, Raoul Follereau Foundation, St. Francis Leprosy Guild, Sasakawa Health Foundation, The Leprosy Mission International, Turing Foundation and Until No Leprosy Remains (NLR). The donors who maintain ALM also contributed to the research. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gUGefayj #leprosy #stillathing #zeroleprosytransmission #zeroleprosydisability #zeroleprosydiscrimination
