Jayden Battey, National Partnerships Manager, had the unique opportunity to speak at the United Nations in New York last week. As a passionate advocate of working towards a #BetterWorldForAll, Jayden highlighted the value of togetherness as we find solutions to some of the world's greatest issues. 🤝

“…As our world fragments and as divisions between people grow wider, isolation leaves us only more anxious and more dangerous than before. And whilst being together breed empathy, isolation breeds contempt. While some world leaders use contempt and fear as tools for political gain, we can do better. We must practice genuine friendship, listening, and work to forge a future founded in respect, connection, and the understanding that every person deserves a voice and a seat at the table. This is important. Because While contempt breeds aggression, togetherness heals deep wounds. Caring for only ourselves breeds anxiety, but caring for others leads to peace…” - I’m proud to have shared some thoughts on youth, peace and security, individualism and isolation, and the rise of contempt in the private and political square at the United Nations in New York this weekend. As almost half of the world’s population elect their leaders this year, it’s critical we use our voice - and votes - to demand a higher calibre of leader. We cannot continue to manipulate anxiety and fear of the ‘other’ to advance our own agendas. We think advancing our own interests alone leads to security: but it doesn’t. Even on a global scale, contempt will never lead to peace. AFS Youth Assembly Baptist World Aid Australia The Reach Alliance University of Melbourne

It was a privilege to be in Canberra with other fabulous women to speak with politicians of every persuasion about why it’s so important for Australia to increase what we spend on international aid and development. The wellbeing of our global neighbours - both near and far - depends on it, and it’s good for Australia and our strategic interests too. But do you know that currently, our investment in safer world for all is just 0.68% of federal government spending? Even in the current economic environment, we can and must do better.

Melissa Lipsett, CEO, and Fiona Smith, Director of International Programs, were pleased to have the opportunity to represent Micah Australia alongside other Christian women leaders in Parliament House last week. They were there to speak about the need for Australia to increase its International Aid budget in the face of polycrisis—an increase in compounding conflicts and crises around our world. Investing in development, peace-making and security is not just good for our global neighbours, it’s good for Australia. Today is #WorldHumanitarianDay, and this morning I joined colleagues on the lawns of Parliament House in vigil to remember the 452 Humanitarian workers who've lost their lives in areas of conflict this year. Marc Purcell, CEO for the Australian Council for International Development, reminded us of one of Jesus' most famous parables: The Good Samaritan. He asked the question, what sort of world are we living in when our Good Samaritans have become the victims of our inability to get along with each other? This is a day for sombre reflection, particularly for those of us who call themselves followers of the Prince of Peace—Jesus, who himself said 'Blessed are the Peacemakers.' Can I invite you to take a moment today to pause, and consider what it might mean to pray for peace, and to act in a way that means we become part of answering this prayer—remembering that every human being has been imprinted with the divine image. —Mike Bartlett, Advocacy Policy Manager #ActForHumanity #SaferWorldForAll
